They say that the wedding ring quilt is for advanced quilters. Don't believe them. I have only been quilting for a couple of years and the VERY VERY FIRST quilt I made was a double wedding ring quilt. I found it easy to make but it got very boring to me. But I made a good dozen of them. And won't make anymore of them. They are just too boring to me and I don't know why. Good luck on your venture if you make one. Your son will just love it. :) I did NOT have a plastic template. I found the pattern in a magazine and I copied the page and made a template out of a manila folder. :)

I would say try the paper piecing I have never done PP till I did my first double wedding ring quilt. It went together quickly and very easily and with so many on this board who has done this quilt you will not be alone!

I too wanted to make a wedding ring quilt for my daughter. Too advance for me too.
So my friend gave me a kit from fat quarter world. It has all the fabric cut. Even with this you still have to take your time. I am still working on this quilt sewing all the small piece assembly method.
But it is looking good.
Kit is pricey 119.99

I have made two The first one hand pieced and quilted.
I used Sharlene Jorgensen templates with the second one they are wonderful. (My Avtar DWR)
Good Luck.

If I were to make one, I would do it the Quiltsmart Way, it is the one Foolproof way and is easy enough for a beginner. Just sew on the lines!!!

There is a pattern that uses a solid arc instead of the little pieces, it is just as pretty and would cut down the time for sure I think Shar Jorgensen has the templates, correct me ladies if I am wrong in spelling her name. You can google her and her templates are there.
