I have had a request to make a weighted blanket for a 5 year old. Has anyone ever made one? I understand that Poly pellets are the best thing to use for weight. I will get this. any other tips I need to know?

I'd make the blanket with a zip off cover like a duvet. That way I could wash it more often without the inner blanket wearing thin as soon.

I make weighted blankets and there is an easy pattern at projectlinus.org for it. For weight, we used old sheets, bath blankets and towels to roll and insert into the tubes. We use velcro to close both sides of the blanket to allow the fillers to be removed for washing. I will be more than happy to send you a copy of a blanket pattern by pm, just let me know. I have made 411 in almost 3 years time. They are simple to make, can easily be made in under 30 minutes.

What is the reason for a weighted blanket? Never heard of them but did just look at the tute.

They are great for anyone with sensory integration issues. The weight is calming and a little preasure helps kids or others sleep or calm down. Gives them st of a sense of security. They are very often recommended by ocupational or physical therapists.

Never heard of it. Thanks so much. I learn something new everyday on this board. And they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks.. They are mistaking!!!

Autistic spectrum children normally cannot stand to be held and are restless. The weight of the blanket makes them feel held/swaddled and secure. Using the blankets at night mostly insures the child will get a good night's rest. Part of their problem is not being able to get a good night's sleep. Without the proper rest, the child cannot pay attention and learn. If the child isn't sleeping/resting, that means the parents/family aren't sleeping/resting either. I have had several parents tell me that once the blanket became a part of the nighttime ritual, everyone was able to sleep.

we used muslin (pockets) to hold the pellets inside the quilt top

If the blanket/quilt is for a child with autism, etc., check with the child's doctor to find out how heavy the quilt should be. divide that weight by the total number of pockets you will have to determine how much to put in each pocket. This provides the most benefit to the child.
