My lqs sent out a postcard where they were offering this: Bring in your orphaned one yard or more cuts of fabric to exchange for a $2 off coupon to be used in the purchase of one yard or more fabric from their store.

So let me get this straight: I bring in my fabric which they will buy from me for $2. Then I buy fabric from them for $10 and use the $2 coupon so that I only pay $8.

Why do I feel like I'm getting the short end of the stick in this deal?

JJs 06-20-2010 10:10 AM

the other question is: What are they going to do with the fabric you take in?

sell it as fat quarters?
donate it? Where?

destroy it?
use it for the million pillow slips?

HeatherQuilts 06-20-2010 10:13 AM

I can see where it would be nice though. If there is a fabric there that you really want, getting $2 off a yard is pretty good. Especially if you have fabric at home you know you will never use (why did I buy that again?? lol) I would imagine they are donating it somewhere, or making things to donate. I would contact the shop and ask some questions....

I would contact the shop and get more details

its an advertising gimic to get more traffic in their store, they know that everyone has a piece of fabris that they dont like or will never use,so they are using that to their advantage

amma 06-20-2010 10:22 AM

If the collected fabric was going to a charity project I would probably participate, if not... I am not sure.....

sewcrafty 06-20-2010 10:29 AM

LMAO!!! What a DEAL!!!!

If it were going to charity doesn't it seem like they would say so? Yes, I'm on board if there's a fabric I don't think I'll use, but I think I'd sell it somewhere else and probably get more for it. Or donate it to my guild for charity quilting. $2 seems a little stingy for one yard (or more) of fabric

Minda 06-20-2010 10:34 AM

It sounds like a good way to get rid of fabric that you'll never use. I have fabric that I bought many years ago, that I wonder now why I ever wanted it. I would like to get $2.00 a yard credit for it at a LQS.

It's not $2 per yard--It's $2 per cut. You'd do better cutting larger pieces into one yard cuts.

littlehud 06-20-2010 10:37 AM

That is one of those offers that leave you asking WHY????? I agree if the fabric was going for charity it would be great.

Granna of 5 06-20-2010 11:06 AM

I don't believe they have thought this one through..Why would I want to take a piece of fabric that I might have paid $8.00 per yd and get $2.00 credit toward another sale from them. If they just sent out $2.00 coupons I think they might do better. As for the unwanted fabric someone, somewhere is looking for that very fabric!

raptureready 06-20-2010 11:40 AM

If you bought some of the 25 cent a yard fabric when Walmart was taking out their fabric departments or have some that you bought on a garage sale, or even have some poly/cotton it just might be worth it. I can't imagine taking decent fabric in.

I agree a very weird advertising promo  It is one of those ... what where they thinking  LOL

I got the same postcard this week. I think it also said you could exchange your unwanted cut for someone else's unwanted cut. I'd prefer to do a straight swap than getting the $2. I think we're better off waiting for a good % sale. I'm pretty patient for those sales to come around.

Hmmm. I'll need to look at it again. Uh Oh. Recycled already. I read it out loud to my husband to see what his take on it was. I didn't get that, but you might be right. It's still a strange way to get people into the store.

sewgull 06-20-2010 03:54 PM

Sounds like a goverment sale. You give me $2.00 and will sell you this for $8.00.

as a government employee i must object to this. you have it all wrong.

you pay $2 for it. the government buys it from you for
$32,423.57.

back to the topic. if it's a chance to trade with others, it would probably turn out to be a blast. can you imagine all the laughter over the different fabs people brought? or the ecstatic joy when somebody finds a fab they've been searching for high and low?

if they seriously want you to give them a yard or more of fabric for a lousy $2 discount on ridiculously expensive fabric ... well ... then i guess they figured out a new way to spell "sucker".

annette1952 06-20-2010 10:42 PM

Yeah, that is weird. No incentive there for me.

your are correct.

Marjpf 06-21-2010 03:12 PM

Seems to me like someone thought this would sound fun, but it's too weird. I guess if you have some really ugly fabric you can get rid of any other way you could do this with it. I would probably go into the store just to find out what's going on and then end up buying a bunch without the coupon!

Luv Quilts and Cats 06-21-2010 03:13 PM

I wonder what other ideas LQS will come up with to sell their $10/yard fabric. I have seen fabric going for $10.75/yard. That is just ridiculous.

ann clare 06-21-2010 03:14 PM

Weird is the word. I would hold on to my fabric.
