This morning, I was quilting and my DH is reading the paper. He tells me we are going somewhere. We get ready and leave. Imagine my surprise when we arrive at a quilt show given by a local quilt quild.
I have never been to a quilt show, ever. On entering, you spun the wheel to get prizes. I won a pin cushion and he won fat quarters. The gave me my form to pick my favorites. He was so happy that the let him "judge"
too. After admiring the quilts a few times, off to the exhibiters area.
While I was picking out fat quarters, he is talking to a lovely 80 something lady. He told her I was buying more fabric and that I sure didn't need it. She told him and I quote, "She is a quilter and so am I. I probably don't have a lot of time left on this earth. I have a pretty big stash at home and I am going to add some of this lovely fabric to that stash. You never know when you just might need it."
I think DH had as much fun as I did. What a wonderful day. I guess I will keep him.

Great eating in the Amish Blue Gate. I was not there long enough.

What a sweet husband you have to take such an interest. But what I want to know is... is he going to share his fat quarters with you, or make something of his own??? Watch out, your stash may be at risk!

sharon b 10-03-2009 07:51 PM

I think it's wonderful when DH gets involved. Mine is my color consultant and he loves to go to quilt shows. I'm so happy for you,

BellaBoo 10-03-2009 09:56 PM

I think it's sweet when I see husbands at quilting events with their wives but having said that, I have no desire for my hubby to want to go to a quilt show with me. :D

Marcia 10-04-2009 07:33 AM

What a sweet surprise your husband did!!

I am so glad you had a great time. What did you end up buying??

sewjoyce 10-04-2009 07:35 AM

What a fantastic surprise!!! (Yes, you definitely have a keeper!)

Aren't quilt shows fun????? :D

adrianlee 10-04-2009 10:50 AM

Totally sweet!!! My hubby goes with me to quilt shows and sometimes he'll pick out a quilt and tell me what he likes about it, maybe colors or patterns. He gets nervous if I look the fabric ventors and you know how pricey some of these beautiful materials can get at these shows $$$$. Like my brother-in-law would say, "they're pretty proud of their $tuff". So happy you got to see a quilt show and how fun they are.

What a nice surprise and what a great DH you have!

In June, 2008, I wanted to go to the large AQS show at the Convention Center in Columbus (OH), but didn't have anyone to go with and really needed someone to drive. I walk with a cane due to arthritis and knew I'd have to walk a long way if I drove and parked myself, whereas if someone else drove they could drop me off at the closest entrance to the show, then park. I was surprised when my son offered to take me. He lives in Columbus, so he had to drive an hour-and-a-half to pick me up. It was his birthday (his 34th), so it really was a nice gesture on his part. He also carried my purse much of the time as we walked around the show, which was above and beyond the call of duty. It turned out to be a good way to find out what kind of quilts he liked (Celtic and art quilts, but nothing traditional at all).

I planned all year to go again this past June. My son was out of state, but my daughter promised she'd go with me. About two weeks before the show, she discovered she had to work and couldn't get off. My DH offered to take me, but could only go on Saturday, when I knew it would be crowded. We decided to go in spite of that and my DH tried hard to act like he wanted to go, but I knew his heart wasn't really in it. Ironically, this year the day we could go fell on HIS birthday. In the end, I decided not to go, but to use the $50 entrance fee ($25 each) to get his birthday present. My DH had just been laid off and money was tight. I was so disappointed, but felt it was the right decision.

However, I really, really hope I'm able to go next year :!:

This is what he won and what I bought.
The fat quarters had a show special price of $1.60. Not too bad.

so happy for you and hubby. Sounds like a great day, and so sweet to hear about the 80 something year old lady, explaining to him about 'quilters'. Gave him insight, that if it were our last day on earth, and there was a big sale...guess we'd kick the bucket in the quilting section, lol!
Good thing mine hasn't done this, I'd probably fain't
although, the last time we went to a large town together, I had made up my mind, that day, NOT to go to the fabric store, and then he just pulled up there anyway, and said, he wanted to listen to the talk radio show
Wouldn't you know, for the first time, I didn't buy a thing. I have never done that before...so it was a first for both of us, lol! :D

rivka 10-05-2009 08:18 AM

Wow, that's a good man you've got there! The one time I dragged my husband to a quilt show, he was bored out of his mind. Thankfully I have a friend that is into quilts, and I'll go with her from now on :)
