Westalee Ruler Book
 

I saw Joan's Westalee Ruler course on line came with the book. The course is rather expensive considering I am just a hobby quilter. Is the book that is included in the course that can be purchased separately sufficient to learn how to make different designs with the rulers?

I've played around with my sampler set and watched some tutorials on line including joining some of the live stream classes.
Since the book does not have a "preview" or "sneak peek" to see how it is laid out, I wasn't sure if it was worth buying.

Welcome. I'm not sure which book or online course you are talking about. Maybe a link would be helpful.

I appreciate the extra information.

I did search first and found a nice long thread about the course and some others. However, it did not answer my question. I was hoping that someone who took the course or might know if just using the book "Janet Collins Ruler Quilt Design Book" used as part of the course with the same name.
Ruler Quilt Design Book

The book is a practice sampler. It shows how to make a design, then you practice it on a quilt sandwich, then you piece all of the samples together. If you're confident with your rulers, you can use the book as design suggestions. Or instead of piecing the samples together, you can draw out the sections on your quilt top and try out each design in its proper place. I think the price is high because it's coming from Australia.

Is the course you are asking about the one on the Sew Steady website for Sew Steady University? That course uses the Janet Collins Ruler Design book but the description of course states the book is included in digital form. If you go to YouTube and watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqgEoFwdcgg&t=6625s she actually goes through the designs using the book difference is she does individual blocks rather than a whole cloth quilt. I did this quilt in a class at my LQS and it is a great way to learn the starter set of rulers. Link to my posting after I finished this quilt.

Thank you. I wasn't sure if the book gave enough instruction about how to create the designs without having the video course to go along with it.

There is a big difference between a book that names the ruler and shows some pictures vs a book that explains how many cross hairs to mark and how to place the ruler to create the rotation you need.

My plan is to do quilt as you go type blocks (that course is very expensive) because I don't have a large machine. I just don't want to buy the book and find out I really need to buy the course in order to use the book and then have to pay for the book twice.

You did fantastic work. Thank you for sharing the picture. I did see the thread earlier when I was searching for information.

You might also like "JEWEL QUILT BOOK – BY ANGELA ATTWOOD" which uses a quilt as you go method. I did it after I finished the Janet Colllins quilt and found it easier to use the rulers since you worked on sections and not a wholecloth quilt. Here's the link to my post for that quilt.
