I am teaching a needle turn applique class and I am going to select the pattern (or draw one). Im wanting to cover all bases in one pattern: curves, points, circles etc. Any suggestions??

Sun Bonnet Sue fits the bill.

if one can master a heart, one can do anything :D

I don't know whose class my sister was taking, but it was a Sunbonnet Sue small wall hanging. It still sits in my sewing room with the needle still in the unfinished project. She lost her battle with colon cancer before completing it.

The class I took was a wall hanging, it had four flowers with round centers and leaves along a stem that connected all the flowers into a circle. It was great, not intimidating, not overwhelming but enough to know whether you wanted to tackle a full applique quilt or not.

Would another technique be, doing the handle of a basket ... inside/outside curve with a narrow piece of fabric?

I have always liked the heart. It can be done scrappy or more formal. Just be sure to start on a flat side heading to the curve or to the point (I think it works best this way!).
Good luck on your class.

I second this! This is the one we taught at our shop to cover the bases....

Hearts are a perfect shape to learn on as there are straight areas, curves, and inner and outer points. Simple flower shapes are also good. Have fun!

romanojg 05-30-2011 05:41 AM

I would chose a leaf and flower design. You can cover all of the curves, points and also deside how tight you want the curves, etc to be.

Thanks to all-- I knew I would find helpful suggestions here :) I had in mind to do a simple flower--making sure there was a circle for the center :)--think it covers about everything. I dont want to overwhelm anyone, but I dont want it too simple either. Im an applique nut and think everyone should try it once.
Thanks again.
