What Back to School supplies do you use for quilting?

https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/rolleyes.png I like to buy the plastic pencil boxes that have the sliding drawer. The shape is a long rectangle and fits a rotary cutter perfectly. The top has a flap with a snap. I use a permanent marking pen to label what's inside. I also like the clear zipper pouches for holding my new rotary replacement blades.

When back to school supplies are on sale...what do you look for that works well for your quilting hobby?

I use Emer's Gue in attaching my binding to the quilt before I take it to the machine to stitch down. This way I know I have enough binding and no pins to prick me. I also use it on difficult blocks when I need to make sure the seams meet and not shift when I go to stitch them down. Recently on a mock cathedral windows quilt I glued down the curved section before I took it to the machine to stitch down. Would have been too many pins to prick me for sure.

LAF2019 08-09-2020 04:24 AM

elmers glue. glue sticks. mechanical pencils. graph paper

toverly 08-09-2020 04:32 AM

I use the same as LAF2019 but, I also add pocket folders and notebooks to contain the projects I've printed.

Frixion pens...great prices during BTS.

sewingpup 08-09-2020 05:13 AM

I use some of this metal clips that you squeeze to open....to hold blocks or parts for blocks together....easier than pins for me and I don't get poked. I have used a stack of small sticky notes stuck to my stich plate to mark the seam line and also to temperaly label things but need to use a pin for a longer period as the sticky notes will fall off. Oh, and I use sticky notes stuck on the bed of my machine if I am using specific stitch settings so I don't forget what I was using if I turn the machine off.

I like the pencil boxes. They are so easy to pack your rotary cutter, small scissors, thread etc. in and keep organized that way.

Stitchnripper 08-09-2020 06:48 AM

Just Elmer's washable school glue, but, some places put it on sale throughout the year.

Onebyone 08-09-2020 06:57 AM

I bought the Crayola erasable colored pencils. I thought they would by handy to have. I buy lots of the Crayola Ultra Clean markers.

Barb2018 08-09-2020 07:56 AM

Crayola washable markers, plain old blackboard chalk, Elmer's washable school glue and a cheap compass to draw circles.Couldn't quilt without them.....
The chalk comes off with a soft toothbrush.

A binder and some of the sheet protectors to keep patterns organized.

I use both the Elmer's Washable Glue Stick and the Elmer's Washable School Glue in the little bottles. Since I learn Glue basting I have been in hog heaven! I will not go back to pin basting. I have had perfectly basted quilts every time.

Onebyone 08-09-2020 10:22 AM

I buy Elmer's Washable School glue in the gallon jug at Walmart. I won't run out for many quilts later and it's cheaper then buying buy the bottle but those are inexpensive to begin with. I keep my glue sticks in a freezer zip lock in a plastic school box. I'm still using the ones I bought for .10 a tube years ago and they are still good. The older ones seem to be better glue then the tubes made now or it could be being in the cold temp for so long?

I am a retired Kindergarten teacher who loves Fiskars for Kids scissors. They are sharp enough to clip threads, including wool yarn With slightly rounded tips, they won't poke a hole in your quilts but sharp enough to clip threads closely.
I buy several when I see them in the Back to School displays. I tie a ribbon thru them and wear them around my neck.
(Speaking from experience in the classroom, they are sharp enough to cut hair!)
I also buy Crayola washable markers. I have never had a problem with their not washing out. I read that sometimes the yellow is difficult to remove, so I don't use that color.

SallyS 08-09-2020 12:28 PM

Children's Fiskars scissors so I won't cut fabric accidentally when I'm cutting threads. Some have a rounded tip but I prefer the ones that are more pointed. I use them for cutting paper, too.

Like many others here, I love Elmer's School Glue and Crayola's Ultra-Clean Washable Markers.

I buy and use a lot of the above items. I buy the clear boxes, when I can find them to hold spools of quilting thread.

IceLeopard 08-10-2020 12:26 AM

Binder clips. Soooooooo many binder clips! I'm working on Glacier Star and had to go out and buy more to hold my stacks of cut pieces together.

https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/birthday.gif I just heard another smart idea on Americanpatchwork and quilting radio podcast for storing specialty rulers.

Place your smaller specialty rulers in sheet protectors, along with the instructions on how to use them. Place them in a binder to keep them all in one place.

Thanks. I love that idea! I just started collecting specialty rulers and was wondering yesterday how to organize them!

Finally, sounds like a easy way to corral all of them.https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.pnghttps://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/thumbup.png

Great tip Copycat. I will definitely be rearranging my rulers in the near future.

I use the notebook pouches like these for rulers. You can store in a notebook or upright in a magazine holder.
Someday, I will make nicer labels for them.

Rhonda K 08-10-2020 06:19 AM

I also like these to hold current projects, notepads, notebooks, etc.

I found this school box at Walmart. It has two openings.

Lena1952 08-13-2020 04:15 AM

I buy the colored highlighter page tabs to use on my rulers. I place one just outside the line I need to cut on. Makes finding those lines easier and I make fewer miscuts. I also buy a pack of children's paintbrushes to use for machine cleaning. Plus all the other goodies mentioned previously.

Onebyone 08-13-2020 06:42 AM

I went to Target yesterday and I wandered through the school supplies. I couldn't believe the same items were double the Walmart price. The book holders were $3 and the very same one at Walmart were .98 Same label and colors. I went to Walmart and bought several of them. They are great to hold magazines upright.

RedGarnet222 08-13-2020 04:30 PM

I use mechanical pencils, regular number 3's, a good pencil sharpener, notebook paper, compass, plastic sleeves for paper, hole punches for drafted patterns, erasers, binders, theme notebooks for notes and ideas, paper scissors, dividers with the title tabs, plastic sleeves that have a flap on top to hold machine embroidery cards and instructions in a binder. elbow (crook-neck) desk lamp, computer, printer, cd player, exacto knife, pencil holders and those plastic and metal roll-around drawer shelves and stationary ones too. Bookshelves. Also, basket organizers for cd's, drawer organizers to round up those little things and don't forget the extra electrical cords and breakers for safe plug in of the machines. I am sure there are others I use, but, really if I find it in school supplies and I have a use for it, it comes with me to the sewing room.

RedGarnet222 08-13-2020 04:31 PM

Oh clip board and a typing stand come in handy too. Also, permanent markers.

Onebyone 08-13-2020 04:41 PM

Oh the small pretty colored milk crates are so handy to have too.
