What batting should I use on crazy quilt jacket

I want to make a jacket with some crazy quilting on it. I have never made a quilted garment so I don’t know what I should use for the batting. Any suggestions?

I would use a single piece of flannelette.
It'll give you a bit of quilty feel, some drape and a slight warmth, with a cozy feel,
while not becoming bulky or be as warm as many of the other traditional battings could be.

The flannelette should work well with either hand or machine quilting/embroidery
for the crazy quilting.

Most battings don’t have the drape required for clothing. Silk batting is the best batting for clothing.

I'd use silk too. Drapes well.

I would look into Thermore. It's designed for clothing and will drape:

Thermore or silk

I do a lot of wearables. I don't use batting at all. For some garments I use flannel. Some garments I use a bottom weight twill as the lining and use some type of stitch and flip technique to place the blocks on the backing. It gives a much nicer drape with no bulk. Unless you are going for a really warm garment, you don't need batting.

I’ve seen an ordinary sweatshirt cut open in the front, then sleeves split open at the underarm seam. It’s used for a base for patchwork then sleeves are sewed shut again and front edge is finished off. There are more details of course, like bottom band is removed. Directions should be out there somewhere !

Thanks everyone! I ordered some Thermore, silk, and a yard of white flannel. I didn’t have a clue before. Now I have some choices. Wish me luck!

SherB, when you complete your jacket please tell what you ended up using, why, how you liked the end result and what would you have done differently. I would be very interested in knowing how it turned out!!
