I've just completed the top of a flannel baby quilt for my grandson-to-be and need to decide what batting to use. On the one hand, I think I'd like something with high loft (makes it puffy :wink: ) but I also want it to be soft and drapey. He will live in the Boston area, so warm is good.

If it makes any difference, I expect to stitch-in-the-ditch around the blocks.

What are your suggestions?

Ive used another layer of flannel for batting and makes it nice and warm, but also the warm and natural works good and flat with flannel too :)

I use cotton for a warm quilt, poly tends to overheat a baby (so does fleece)

flannel sounds good, I havent tried it yet, I dont know how warm it would be?

I love puffy looking baby quilts also :) I dont prewash my fabric before pieceing and quilting... it shrinks up all puffy and cuddly :)

Some of the 100% poly needs to be quilted very closely, depending on the manufacturers specs... Maybe a poly cotton blend? You would get a little puffiness and it would breathe better than poly only :D:D:D

I used a low loft poly in my Ds's flannel quilt and tied it and it is nice and fluffy and drapes well. No issues with shifting or anything either!

I live in Utah, and I just made a flannel quilt for my friend, I had a flannel top and flannel backing, and I used hobbs heirloom cotton/poly (80/20) batting and the mom loves it. It feels pretty warm as well.

I do like the poly because of the puffy, but it can keep a baby too hot.

also... if you tie a baby quilt its fluffier, or quilt at least four inchs apart... its softer.

I used low loft in the two I made earlier this year. I didn't want them to be too bulky.

I used flannel as batting in one, and soft and natural in the other. Both warm and snuggly after many washings, but, not fluffy.
