what is best weight thread to machine piece?

Hi everyone. Just curious about what is the best weight thread to use for machine quilting? Thank you

Your title says machine piecing, but the body says machine quilting. For piecing, my favorite thread is Aurifil 50wt 2-ply cotton. It also happens to me favorite for quilting on my DSM. :)

I like Presencia 60 wt. thread for piecing. It's a little finer than 50 wt. so the 1/4" seams are a little more accurate. I generally use 50 wt. for quilting, but I've used 40 wt. when I want the quilting to show more.

I use 50wt but some use 60, I have never tried 60wt so I can't comment on if its better or not

Just want to mention that there's a big difference between 50wt 2-ply and 50wt 3-ply. 50wt 3-ply is the commonly used regular sewing thread. 50wt 2-ply is much finer. One reason I like Aurifil is that it is such a smooth thread -- very little lint and, because it is fine, the bobbin holds much more of it.

i use prewounds in the bobbin for this reason and it lasts longer without replacing. i like 60 weight on the top for piecing

I only use 50 wt. Prescensia thread. I am going to have to research the 60 wt. thread. I don't know if it's strong enough. If it is, I'm going to have to try it after I use all my cones of 50 wt. up. I have about 10 cones of them, so it will be a while yet.

I second the Presencia 60 for piecing. Love it.
For quilting, it depends on the design. If there's a lot of back tracking I use 60, otherwise 40 or 50.

Great question...I tend to forget that thread weight makes a difference.
