What to buy....
 

I have a friend who has an emboridery business and she would love for me to make blankets for her to buy. Gives her more options to chose from and helps me make a little money. And I have a friend who is starting a photography business and needs some props. She has already given me an idea of what she is looking for. Now hubby has said as long as I make a little profit, he would be ok with me doing this. So he has said I could spend $200 for now to get my stash and all started. So what would you buy? I know I want the shape cut ruler as I can't cut straight to save my life. My friend who emboriders says receiving blankets are always a hit, so would flannel be the best for those? Should I get some yardage of solids? If so, what color? I figure white is a must as those make cute sashings.

Oh and should I invest in some stuff for weighed blankets? Is there a market for those? I made my 4lb for probably $25 since I used old pillowcases for the inside. Though I would re-work the design.

Minkee fabric is very popular for baby blankets. My DD is expecting a baby in a few months and it made better sense to buy solid color receiving blankets and add fabric applique of her choice of color and shapes. It may be better for you to buy ready made receiving blankets and add applique designs and your friend can then add the embroidery designs to customize those. If you sew blocks you have to have backing to hide the seams, then it wouldn't be a receiving blanket.

I think receiving blankets from flannel would be good. I don't think I would do a weighted blanket for a baby or small child. A regular baby quilt might be nice. I would buy something - anything that would help you cut things straight.Good luck.

The weighted blanket would be geared towards those with sensory disorder, like my daughter.

And so funny you posted that video, I saw the one on MSCO and have one in the works; got it pinned, now to find time to sew it.

There is a video on U-tube from Missouri Quilt Co on making receiving blankets that is really good.

Are you making blankets or quilts

As shown on this site (the one paperprincess has given us) the self binding blankets are fast and easy to make. Everyone around here love them. They make great gifts and as paperprincess has said they would be great for embroidery. I would make them out of flannel.

I made one of the self binding blankets yesterday (see this link). It was pretty easy, expect for me using minky, lol. But overall, it was pretty quick and easy.
