There is a technique called "Piecing with Poppers" which incorporates a very narrow (1/4" strip) between blocks, sections of blocks or wherever you want them. Can't remember the name of the quilter who does this technique, but I am sure if you google Piecing with Poppers her name and technique will come up. If this is what you want, check out the Jenny Doan tutorial that EasyPeezy linked to. It uses a different color instead of black, but otherwise should work.

You can paper piece these squares and that would keep your HST and the narrow black lines even. Just a thought. Easy enough to draft out on graph paper.
