Check your tentions rollers, there might be a piece of thread in them.

hi make sure you rethread the machine. my little janome will do that if i have it threaded wrong.

Ditto on the needle. I often forget to change the needle and hear that same sound.

I am a firm believer in changing the needle after every project. If you had just sewn a demin quilt you should have had a denim needle in and if you then change to cotton you need a different needle. Until I tooka class in needles I never would have believed what a difference they nake. Gppd luck

Sounds to me like there has to be a small burr on the needle.

I replace my needle for every project. My philosophy is that the needle cost about .50 cents (buy on sale at Joann's, Schmetz are great) and you will save yourself so much grief, this is the smallest investment in your project and you can save yourself soooo much grief. Don't skimp on this.

Needle problem?? Use Microtec needles, they are really sharp. Could also be a tension problem. :-)

thank you all, it was definitely the needle, I did some sewing last night after changing it and it sewed like a dream.

It sucks being new to this stuff, but got to learn somehow, sometimes what just seems to be common sense to someone already familiar with the situation, is not common sense for someone new to it.

So please forgive me if I tend to ask stupid "I should have known" type questions. I know that if I am stuck, that someone here will be able to help, and for that, I am extremely thankful. You, all of you, is what makes this board/forum a place that people want to come to, and new sewers feel comfortable asking questions.

I had this problem yesterday and realized I was using some old thread. After it broke for the 3rd time, I tossed the spool. So, if you've changed to a new needle, cleaned the bobbin area, checked your bobbin thread, re-threaded your machine and still the thread breaks, toss it!

You need a new needle.

I was having lots of breakage when I did my free motion quilting. I have a Viking Quilt Designer II and the book stated that Inspira needles were best so I got my first one. They are a bit more expensive but worth every penny.
What a big difference. No more breakage. These needles have a smooth beveled entry so the thread doesn't wear and tear.
Thread I thought I'd never be able to use for quilting again is never a problem any longer.

I would use a14 or 16 to so on denim . Igo by the US size 10 11 12... Not the Europe size75 80 90... your needle will be inter changeable a good brand is Schmetz thats hat I use

Sometimes when my thread breaks, I find that for whatever reason the thread gets out of the "pick-up lever" (the little thing that you see moving up & down right in front of you when the needle moves) before the thread goes down to the needle. I just have to rethread the needle. I am glad to learn all about the importance of changing needle through this thread. THank you all.

Also dust out the bobbin area, and oil your machine.

I have had thread break when there is a rough spot on the edge of the spool. Smoothed it off with a nail file.

If it is the needle making the tic tic noise, you need a new needle. For more trouble shooting, go to Superior Threads web site. They have a trouble shooting chart that is easy to follow. The have an educational series on thread, tension, and needles, excellent. It really opened my eyes, he debunked a lot of myths about thread and tension. I found the series on The Quilt Show but it may also be on the web site.

If you are using Coats & Clarks thread, make sure that the end of the spool where the thread ankers, is opposite from where the thread comes off to go through the maching. If the thread gets caught in there, it will make a clicking sound until the thread breaks. Know from experience.

I find that some of my batiks dull needles pretty quilt too--hear that pop, pop quicker!

Are you threading the needle correctly?? If you are not threading it in the right direction (and not all machines thread front to back or right to left), so you might want to check it.

I'm glad you found your problem! I cleaned 2 machines yesterday. One had the thread breaking issue. Everything checked out through the thread path and bobbin area. I found the problem while inserting the needle. The needle plate had a hairline crack in it causing the thread to snag and break. The owner was thrilled that was the only problem. Me too!
