What can I possibly do with this gifted fabric? Can someone help me?

A very dear friend of mine went home to Scotland for a visit and brought me back a souvenir. She was so thrilled to give it to me because she knew I was a quilter and was sure I'd be able to make something beautiful with it. Like many non sewer/quilters she feels like me (a relatively new quilter) can work miracles because I have a sewing machine. I am a quilter and have never been a garment sewer. I have no clue what I can do with it and I just know she will be waiting on the sidelines to see what beautiful thing I have created. Can anyone help? Thank you! |
I am no expert like other quilters on this forum. I would use this for the backing fabric. Is it wool?

Make a bag out of it!

I used a similar fabric in flannel and made rag edge denim quilts for two of our grandsons.
Using red thread on the denim ties the colors together. |
this is scrappy, but you could do yours with the posted fabric and maybe one or two other plaids

I would first take a large square of it, fringe it 2-3 inches deep all the way around, then zigzag around just above the fringe to keep it from fraying any more, then wear it as a shawl with a large pin on the shoulder to hold it.

You have not said how much you have or the fiber content.
While I like the suggestion from flikkem, I have an alternative. If, as I suspect, it is wool, I would begin by washing it to felt it, then use simple downloaded coloring pages as patterns to make raw edge applique critters to put on plain background(s) Alternately, I have made both a very large Sun Bonnet Sue or a teddy bear, to make a single whole quilt image, with some embellishment from other fabrics, making a throw or cot sized quilt. I cut my patterns from a single sheet of newspaper, which took a couple of tries. My fabric, was obviously quite different. I pre-quilted before adding Sue |
If you decide to felt it, I suggest you do it at a laundromat. I've done some extensive felting in the past and did it at home. My house smelled like a wet dog for hours! :D

Beautiful piece of fabric. If it is wool I would make scarves out of it. Roll the sides and fringe the edges.

Like QM, I thought of applique immediately. I thought of the little Scottish terrier as an applique.
