What to charge to put binding on a quilt?

What would be a fair price to charge to put binding on a queen size quilt?

Most people charge by the inch. Here's a recent discussion:

I measure all sides (because quilts are not always square) and charge $.25 per inch. This is for machine-sewing to the front, then hand-sewing to the back.

I do think it would depend for whom you are doing it, how you will be doing it (all by machine or machine then hand sewn down) and any other specifics.

When one of my quilting friends was unable to hand sew any more, I would sew her bindings down for free. But that was because we were friends and friends do for each other. But if this is going to be a side business then I would charge by the inch, and the charge would depend on what is being requested.

Back in the old days of when I quilted for others, I charged an hour to attach the binding then I would measure the quilt. I could stitch 5 feet in an hour so I went on that basis. It is so hard to charge by the hour because there are always interruptions. I just did the calculation and made about 4.5 cents per inch. PLEASE realize that this was OVER 12 years ago.
