What to charge for a T-shirt quilt?
 

For those of you who make t-shirt quilts--do you charge a flat rate (supplies included) or do you charge extra for supplies on top of the base charge for putting it all together and sewing it? I think I'm killing myself here. I charged $250 and by the time I take out supplies ($75.00) I'm only netting $175. The quilt was 15 1/2 x 15 1/2 squares with 4 rows across and 5 down. Approx. 78x98. Suggestions and thanks!

$10,000.00. Of course, that is what I charge for every quilt I make.

Before deciding to charge for any quilt you really need to figure out what your time is worth to you, a ball park materials need and quilting/ binding charges. There are many different formulas used. Some people choose to charge by the square footage of the quilt, some triple the price of materials, some ( who are experienced and know how long it takes them) are pretty good at estimating their time & charge a rate plus materials. Everyone is different, has different requirements, needs and feelings about it. It is something You need to figure out and discuss with the customer Before starting any project.

You really have to keep your prices reasonable in what area you live in otherwise you will have no business. People in the city have much more income then people living in the rural areas. Is it worth the time and effort you put into making t-shirt quilts to pocket $175.00??

CKCOWL has the correct idea. What is your time worth to you? You can't afford one of my quilts because I won't quilt for less than minimum wage. Matter of fact, I won't quilt for minimum wage. A quilt, done right, takes a lot of time. My quilts are for me or for those I care about. That transcends money. But to finish a quilt that took you 80 to 100 hours to finish, a hundred bucks in fabric, batting and thread, then get 250.00 for it? Life is too short.

Pricing needs to be worked out before you start a job. Put it in writing, detailing what you are going to do and an approximate completion date, and get half down. It's probably too late now.

The going rate around here is $25 per tee shirt. That includes the sashing, batting, backing, etc.

You had 4 across and 5 down, for 20 tee shirts. That would be 20 shirts x $25 each = $500.
