what is a "chip"?
I was reading the current Quilt Maker magazine, it is their anniversary edition, and they were talking about how things have changed over the years.
At one point, they were talking about pre-cuts popularity or when it began (don't have the mag with me-sorry). And they said "chips, jelly rolls.....". Well, I know jelly rolls, honey buns, turnovers, layer cakes, charms, dimes, nickles, dessert rolls and probably a few more, but I have never heard of "chips"! What is that? Or, maybe my cold/flu brain just misunderstood what they said>>>>> |
Have never heard of that either!

This is what Northcott calls their 5" squares from the Stonehenge collection, actually they call theirs "Strips and Chips" which is the 2 1/2" Jelly Roll and the 5" Charm Squares. OzarksGma |
Chips are what Northcott calls their 5" charm squares from their Stonehenge collection.
Thanks I did not know that either.
I am so lost... Most of those I have not heard of. Technology terms have hit the quilting world.
Well heck, and I was about to ask if the chips were plain or flavored:D
Chips are potato or grain based snacks, available in a variety of flavors. My current favorite is pizza flavored Pringles!!!! Hehehehe
I was lost once you hit "dimes, nickels and dessert rolls".
hey, i'm still figuring out crumbs!!
Are chips and crumbs related?? hehe
I think they're in cahoots with the Hostess people. lol
Thanks for the laughs, I was really getting down in the dumps -- missing family while still in Indy. I , too, had to look those terms up. Teresa
Thanks, I didn't know that, nor had I heard of chips before.
I think those are what we eat when we're quilting...
well, 35 years ago, I knew what nickels and dimes were. After you finished them, you had your dessert. Just saying.

dimes are ten inch squares like layercakes
nickles are five inch squares like charms and chips dessertrolls are five or sometimes six inch by width of fabric and crumbs are odd shaped leftovers that you just cannot part with BTW i luv Stonehenge..... |
Didn't know that...great question..
I remember when charm squares were in all sizes, now the Moda people seem to have convinced everyone they have to be 5".
First time I ever heard about chips...now where is the dip?......I'm getting the munchies!!
that is a new one on me too
Always something new to keep us guessing and intrigued!
those dimes and nickels will soon be called "jackson" ($20) and whomever is on a $50, sorry can't put my hands on one just now....ha,ha,ha. And who will be able to afford a "dessert roll", we will all be using "crumbs"............
what are dimes and nickles......and for all you sillies, don't tell me money...LOL......
You're ALL too funny..Thanks for the laugh, as I learn what all the quilt language is about...

And I was guessing a 2.5 by 2.5 square. A quarter of a charm which is a quarter of a layer cake, which is..... Well I was wrong any way. I like my chips with lots of onion dip but it makes sewing so messy. Really clogs up the works. Tee-Hee!
That was interesting information. Now I know what to buy when I am having a "snack attack"!
Your all so funny!
Now I'm confused. Do I look for a patternor for a recipe/menu when I have time to quilt? LOL
All these food terms make me hungry!!! Chips, dessert rolls, jelly rolls, turnovers, layer cakes - designed by women for women!!!! My DH said that yankee candle can get men to buy their candles if they made meatloaf, pot roast, hot wings or bacon scented candles!!!
Learned another fabric slang today. Thanks for the thread!

First, thanks for the answer what chip was! Glad to know I was not the only one, not in the know!
Second, thanks SunlitenSmiles for explaining what some of the things are, to those who had not heard of them. To this I will add that the best place to remind oneself of what all the size are is the ModaBakeShop, under Bakery (see http://www.modabakeshop.com/p/bakery.html) also the Weights & Measures tab tells how to cut those pieces into common block parts. |
So I have a shoe box full of 4" charm squares. What do I call those? How do I adapt the nickle patterns. I think it is a conspiracy. Pass the salsa!;)
