What color border should I use...
2 Attachment(s)
Here is a quilt I made with all my turquoise scraps and white and off white scarps.. The quilt is for our king size bed and to make it fit and have a good drop on the sides and top and bottom, I need to add a 8 inch border so that it is big enough.
So what do you think of using a 3 inch white border to frame the quilt or smaller and then a 5 inch or bigger turquoise border for the last border? I did play around with, maybe the turquoise for the first border and then the white for the last border but I think with the white fabric being the biggest it may look like there is to much white.. I really need another set of eyes on this choice of fabrics... Thanks for your help.. Picture should say from this to this... |
I think an inner border of white and an outer one of turquoise would be beautiful. I love your quilt. So fresh and cheerful! Very clever use of scraps!

I'm with Dina, use the white for a narrow inner border then the turquoise for the wider border.

how about a white inner border, then a piano key border with the turquoise scraps? If you don't have enough left, you could grab a few FQs and mix them in.

this sound good another way to use more scraps up, I'll have to see how that looks may to busy..thanks for your ideas..

A white inner border and then the turquoise would look nice. A piano key outer border may look good also after the white border but you would need to try a sample. Lovely top!

I agree that adding piecing into the border would be nice because it would continue the design all the way out to the edge. I thought maybe a triple border would look nice with a thin (1-1.5") white inner border with cornerstones, followed by roughly the same size or a bit larger of the green striped fabric you used & then a much larger border of grey fabric(s) with alternating blue & green squares on point. I know that's more work (sorry!) but your quilt looks so lovely I thought it deserves to be beautiful all the way out to the very edge. :)

that is going to be a great quilt! I'd definitely want to add a pieced border to tie it together.

I agree white narrow border with turquoise as the wide border key pattern sounds good idea. Or
a old Greek key pattern white with the key in turquoise. |
Do a small inside border of the white fabric just to make the quilt float and then do either a piano border from your scraps or use a teal that you used for the center of your blocks.
|
I was thinking the opposite of some the others... small teal inner border. I think that would be like a frame. I do like the idea of the keyboard outer border or maybe some other type of pieced outer border
Your quilt is beautiful! |
Beautiful Quilt!!! All of the suggestions above are wonderful ideas. Any one you chose will look great!

That is a beautiful quilt and congratulations on taming the scraps.

Beautiful job on your quilt!!! Love your colors.

Your quilt is beautiful! 3 inch white and teal outer boarder would be great.
|
Love the pieced border idea. I would make the inner narrow border something very dark so there is no "bleeding" from any of the blocks, either the white or the teal. Charcoal, navy, maybe even a dark rust. Then add the white and teal from that. Will give it a nice frame.

Beautiful quilt, please post when finished so I can see what you decided to do!

This Border really looks good but I am working with small scraps and have just about use all of this color, but may have enough for a scrappy piano border, I just wanted to start using up all my scraps as they are getting to be to many, and with two large totes of them, it is starting to drive me crazy... Thanks everyone for all your suggestions on my border dilemma.. I now can go forward and get this quilt done.. Thanks

I would make the border all white to make the design seem to float. I'm not a fan of plain strip borders so my opinion is never what anyone wants to hear. LOL

I love your quilt, it's beautiful. Love your scraps too!! I would use a white border the same size as the white strips you used in the quilt, then a nice colorful turquoise print border, at least 6".

Beautiful quilt. I can't wait to see what you decided.

I so agree with this. Many times white inner border makes the quilt look like it has a whole in it. I understand why some say it will make it float, but I'm afraid the beauty of the quilt itself will be lost if you use a white inner border. Using a darker color inner border will frame the quilt itself and really make it shine. If you have enough of the stripe, that would be great for a second border, and then finish with a pieced border to use up all your scraps. If you don't have enough for a second border, then just the inner border and pieced outer border would look great. Just my 2 cents. :) Marcia |
