What did I buy?
 

I made a U-turn when I found a consignment store & was thrilled when I found what I thought was an antique quilt, a double wedding ring - all hand done, including binding. When I got home and spread it out on the floor I happened to notice a label on the back - handcrafted in China, the rest of the label was too faded to read. The hand quilting is beautiful but is there actually a place where this is done? Still? Would love to find out more about it, can anyone help?

Hmmm..all the quilts I've seen from China have had quilting stitches that you could hang your toes in (a saying of my mom's) You have one that is a bit off the norm. Appreciate and enjoy what you have!

Next time you stop at Cracker Barrel take a look at the quilts they sell. They are also hand made,
and in China, no less.
I found a small quilted pillow cover in a thrift store - which appears to have been hand quilted.
It had a price tag stapled to the quilt which concealed the label. It too was made in China. I plan to use it
on the back of my chair. It is made up of Grandmother's Fans and that is the sole reason I paid $1. for it.

I just recently visited a Cracker Barrel while visiting my daughter in Binghamton. Their quilts are really beautiful!! I, too, was surprised to find they were 'made in China'. We are so used to low-quality items being massed produced coming from there, but these quilts are quite the opposite. They were beautifully detailed. I enjoyed looking but I get much more enjoyment making my own, so a purchase will not be in my future.

I checked the label on the back of the quilted pillow case. and followed it to this web page.
Maybe we should all read some of what it says. Saying something is hand made is not necessarily going to mean it was made in USA.

A few years ago I read an article in a quilting magazine that a lot of the Amish quilts people prize so much are quilted in third world countries.

That's true. A lot of the HGTV quilts and one's sold on QVC, even ones with certificates of authenticity from certain collections, are made in China. That is the only way they can make the quantity to sell at that price. Fabric is cheaper and so is labor.

I have noticed that a lot of quilts sold in stores are made in China. I would rather spend my hard earned money on something made in the USA. We need to support our own.

And some of the "made in China" quilts that I have seen have had U.S.A. patriotic themes. Seems disingenuous to me. One of the reasons I love non-mass produced quilts is that I like to think of the feelings that went into making the quilt.
