What dimensions for a queen size bed?

What would be the minimum size quilt to cover a queen size mattress?

the top measures 60X80 so you have to decide how much overhang you want

If you just want to cover the top of the mattress a queen is 60" X90". Queen sized quilts standard size is 84" X 92" which gives a 12" overhang on the sides and pillow tuck on the top

The top of most queen sized mattresses is 60 x 80 inches. They vary in thickness.

You have to decide how much overhang you want and if you want a pillow tuck. (I put pillows on top of the quilt - but that's my preference.)

You also need to accommodate the pattern you are using. So it doesn't have to be exactly the same overhang on the end as it is on the sides.

There really is no exact measurements especially now a days with mattresses being so thick. I usually made them a little smaller than the batting standard size which is 90"x108".

I'm glad you asked this because I was planning a 96 x 96 quilt for my queen size bed. Overkill. I took out one row and it's now 84 x 96 which should be fine for us.

If you don't use a pillow tuck, that gives you 16 inches on one end, and 12 inches overhang on each side - assuming you don't lose anything in the quilting, which often "shrinks" the size of the unquilted piece.

That should be perfect for us. We don't tuck but I do pull the quilt over the pillows so the overhang should be fairly even all around. Our current store bought quilt (which is a full/queen and doesn't overhang even 12") is wearing out badly (cheapie) so I need to get on this soon. My biggest project yet. eek.

I like more overhang - 18" on each side plus pillow tuck. Plus, if you think you may ever have a king size bed, you might want the larger size.

a king size wouldn't fit in our bedroom (or it barely would). And we live in a brand new house so moving is not in our future. There's pretty much zero chance we'll ever have a king size bed.
