As a newbie to quilting, I was wondering what direction do you iron the seams of your fabric when making a quilt w/many small pieces ?
Some quilting directions do tell you, others do not.

Some say iron opposite direction to cut down on bulk. Some open seams and iron.

I always try to iron to the dark fabric.

press toward one side- the dark- when only a few seams involved- press open when alot of seams in play to reduce bulk. as you gain more experience you will find some blocks just (show you) which way it is best to press--
don't (iron) your seams--(move iron back and forth across fabric to remove wrinkles) only (press) pick iron up, place on seam, press, pick up move, lay down...
if you (iron) your seams they will become (wonky)no longer nice and straight

I agree completely with ckcowl. Seems each quilt presses differently.

I like to tag my rows of a quilt with a piece of paper and arrow to show which way to iron the seam, makes it easy for me. Agree with ckcowl about pressing.

Ditto ... generally to the dark, though sometimes not!
When you can nest your seams, it'll make it much easier for you to ensure that seams and points match best!

If you are having your quilt hand quilted, direction of pressing seams can make a difference. Less so, if it is to be long arm quilted.
