I have 22 8 1/2" squares. They are April Cornell colors - pale blues, yellows, pinks, from about 2 or 3 years ago.

I was going to alternate them with a solid block with a heart appliqued on it but decided it looks too juvenile. Want to make a twin size quilt.

Any ideas what I could turn them into? Don't have much left of the fabirc- they were fat quarters that I've cut other small stuff from.

Thanks!

Barb

How about a disapering nine patch?

nor'easter 10-21-2008 11:42 AM

See if I understand you right. They are plain, unpieced, 8½" squares in primary tints? How many of each do you have?

Barbm 10-21-2008 11:44 AM

I have 2 of each, 15 colors total. Total of 30 squares (sorry- had 22 laid out on the bed to alternate with the applique ones).

I have other colors that would compliment. When I go home I'll take pics and post them.

Maybe you could take and put a 3''/4'' sashing between each one, and make them into row's of three, and then on the outside, maybe a 5-6'' border.. The 1st block a 3''sashing(left side) sewed to the 1st square, and then a 3'' sashing inbetween the 1st and 2nd block, etc, etc.. Hope this made a little sence.. Don

Something like this, increasing in value from left to right?

Yes, half sq triangles. You can do so many designs with them.

Here are some pics. I am leaning towards the hst. Plus, it will give me some experience.

the colors are prettylight and I have them against a white comforter. Don't know if that helps.

I think (for what it's worth) you are heading in the right direction to add some more color. They did seem pretty light. Contrast is what will give it life. Can't wait to see pictures through the process.

By putting light and dark togather in hqt you get the same effect as a log cabin block.

Very pretty colors ! I am not sure what I would do with them, but someone is likely to come up with a brillant suggestion for you.

So I went with hst then thought it needed more oomph. I was browsing a magazine I recently received and there it was- a scrappy quilt with the blocks starting out with what I had sitting on the counter. Cool beans! So I started and realized, because of changing my mind 2 or 3 times with this quilt, I did not have enough fabric of the original fat quarters, so I pulled out the drawer of fat quarters and found more.

I used white from my stash- there are 3 or 4 white on whites. The back is a piece of fabric I was saving for my 30s repro to be made in the future, but it matched nicely so I used it.

So I still have some scraps and 22 hearts I can applique at some time in the future (started saving my used dryer sheets so I can do the tute).

I think it turned out pretty nice and not difficult to do at all. I think my Mom will like it. It feels good too! I want to keep it, but I know she'll use it!

Thanks everyone. Each quilt I do makes me feel better about my abilities. This time it was hst and lining up those triangles.

Janstar 11-21-2008 07:00 PM

I think you did an awesome job on your Mom's quilt and she will love it. I don't blame you for wanting to keep it. The colors are so soft.

mpeters1200 11-23-2008 07:41 AM

Wow....look how 30 squares grew! This pattern was a really good fit for your fabrics. You did a fantastic job! Maybe I should sign up to be your mom if you are going to make her such a beautiful quilt!!

Barbm 11-24-2008 05:17 AM

Thanks! I have some pieces left over that I'm going to make into a throw with the hearts I didn't use. I'll add them to some crumb blocks I already had made and in short time I should have a throw for her living room.

Love using leftovers!
