I quilt for my own pleasure. I make mostly scrap quilts and they all live with me. My family has what they want. The rest will be donated after I pass.

I make quilts because I enjoy it so much and it is a great stress reliever. I have quilts layered on both beds in my 2 spare bedrooms. Also, I make quilts for my grandchildren. As they grow I start with baby quilts and then when they get a big girl/boy bed and then when they are teenagers or just about to graduate from HS.

I don't have a lot of family to give anything to. Frankly, I can't afford to just buy fabric that I'm going to give away as donations every time. When I was working I had an outlet because lots of my coworkers were having babies. So, what do I do with all these quilts?

I have very little family, just my kids and no grands. I quilt for a creative outlet; My happy rhyme is “sew sew sew we go where the quilt ends up no one knows. It’s made with love and lots of care and the perfect someone for it is somewhere out there.” Make it because you want to, no other reason is necessary!

Is it a question of feeling justified in spending the money when it is for family and friends, but not if it is for charity?

From your past threads, you have a very creative spirit, Watson. If I were you, I would not allow the lack of a "home" stop me from fueling that spirit. As long as you have the means, continue trying all the new things you want to try.
We as quilters have often laughed at the "quilter's last will and testament" form. But in reality it is a point to consider. Maybe you could add a codicil to your will with what to do with your wonderful quilt collection. |
If you were a painter, you would be creating paintings and stacking up canvasses for doing a show/sale. You do awesome pieces and when this Covid is over, you could have a show/sale?

I am kind of where you are at with what to do with them. I have made for siblings, kids, grandkids, etc. I donate some to good causes. The rest I have displayed throughout my home and the rest are on a bed or in my quilt cupboard. At times, someone just "touches my heart" and I just give them a quilt. They are always so grateful, often with a tearful thank you. That is worth more than money to me.

I see no difficulty in just making them for you. This is your hobby and creative outlet, you are allowed to spend money on yourself. Better than spending it on something that's 'here today and gone tomorrow'.

Quilting is creativity. I do it because it makes me happy. I can understand being inhibited because there is no one to give the quilt to when it's done. But, the happiness of making them and giving them keeps me going. If you have no outlet for your quilts, think of giving them away. There are lots of charities who like quilts.

Most of my quilts I give away or donate.
I love to make quilts and make them from my stash. I also make quilts for our bed. I just make quilts because I love it and that is my only hobby now. |
