For the sewing section:

Work surfaces for machines and sewing
Cutting island (under the counter top I will hang my scissors and rotary cutters)
Shelves for fabric tubs
Ruler rack
Storage for buttons, threads,
Book shelf for magazines and quilt books.
Storage for batts and backing.
And I am going to use an armoire for storing WIPS and quilts waiting for new homes.

Have I missed anything?
This room is starting from scratch. It is large and has two closets. I am also using the room for painting and scrapbooking and I am putting in a desk and filing cabinet dedicated to DH's part-time business. Any suggestions for these other hobby areas would be appreciated too!

Thanks folks!

Lori

Lori-Lighting is important. Plan it out as you plan your room.

A place for your ironing board.

How about a cozy place to sit to do hand work or look at quilting books and magazines?

A design wall is great to have if you can spare the wall space.

I also have a TV in my quilt room--sometimes nice to have "company".

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head

Lighting... gotcha
Ironingboard... dang I forgot it!
Cozy place to sit... my husband will never see me again!
Design wall... wicked! Thanks!
TV... definitely! On top of the armoire should work fine!

Thanks Marcia!

A place to store all your threads. My DH made me one and now I can find all my threads easily.

Can I come and play, I have to use the spare bedroom and I am fast growing out of it.

I'm going to wait until she gets it all done and posts pictures. Then I'm going to go and play :)

Mamagus 08-10-2008 08:15 AM

Now that would be really cool!

What are you doing this weekend Lori?

"Well my quilting friends from Guam and Spain are dropping by to play in my sewing room!"

At the rate I am packing the old room ( I have to switch out all the STUFF in the little room, store it some where so we can transform the tiny room into a guest room... guests need just little spaces to be happy right?... and then move bedroom furniture into small room from big room and THEN start to make a craft room), I would think you guys should book your tickets to Newfoundland for maybe Easter!

tlrnhi 08-10-2008 08:20 AM

Works for me! I can kill 2 birds with one stone. Visit both you and Aggi! :)

Marcia 08-10-2008 08:23 AM

I want to come play too-I don't take up much room! I think you should post "progress" photos as you go along--just to keep us drooling! :-) I cannot wait to see the finished product!!!

ScubaK 08-10-2008 08:51 AM

Don't forget the Chocolate!!!!

OK! Maybe having these pictures displayed for all the quilting world to see will motivate me!!

Here are the two rooms... as they are today! As you can see I have had to go up the walls as far as possible to get room. I have a desk topped by a book shelf in one corner! Ludicrous and possibly dangerous!

This is the teeny tiny room that now houses all my craft things.

This is the bigger room that I am moving into. The colors stay as is. As do the sunflower border and curtains

I am only litte so I donīt take up much space.

Spain ....Newfoundland.......Alaska.....pop into Guam on the way back....

Sounds like a plan to me.

Marcia 08-10-2008 09:42 AM

Thanks for sharing pics--You are going to have a LOT more room!! This is exciting!! I love planning a quilt room!! When you are finished we will all have a party--I'll bring turtle cheesecake, Elle is bringing wine---what are you bringing Terri?

PS-I love your iron bed and the quilts on it too!!

mgshaw 08-10-2008 10:06 AM

I think it would be kind of fun to go help Lori sort out her stuff ( you know finders keepers  ) then we could help her get set up while enjoying that wine!! Might not get much work done but sure would be fun!!!

luvmy2bts 08-10-2008 10:54 AM

You will also need a place for ironing. I have a table next to my sewing machine at my right side for ironing.

Mamagus 08-10-2008 12:19 PM

Well folks! I am finished sorting for the day! Hubby gets off work at 7 and we are heading to his hometown for a few days.

My brothers-in-law own this business and we want to sneak in a few more boat rides before the whales leave the reserve!

Thanks for all your encouragement! I promise to keep you updated on my progress.

Talk to you all again on Wednesday!

PamH 08-10-2008 12:52 PM

Don't forget your computer...sew you can show us all the progress

Butterflyspain 08-10-2008 01:29 PM

oohhhh...finders keepers...i could get into that!!! and the wine! I definitely agree with the design wall made of huge sheets of felt, anything will stick to that! I wish i had the space for one! :)

Harmony 08-10-2008 08:00 PM

Oh, I know, I know! We could have a world tour, going from house to house and organizing sewing rooms! We could spend 2 or 3 days at each house and then move on to the next one!

Now, where did I leave the jet?

mamatobugboo 08-10-2008 08:17 PM

i woujld love a world tour to visit these quilters - US everywhere, Canada, Spain, England, Austrailia, Guam....what a fabulous time!! I'm ready to book my tickets!

gcathie 08-11-2008 02:58 AM

Check out "my sewing room" in pitcures......might be some tips there....my DH made my sewing shelves....used the wall from floor to ceiling.... but I truly love my cutting table and storage underneath.....it's a good thing I married a Carpenter....I just showed him what I would like to have and waaaa laaaa alakazamm :D

kathy 08-11-2008 03:55 AM

when I get the energy I'm switching rooms too, when we built our 3 br house I used the bigger extra br for guest, I wasn't really sewing at the time, still in a daydream over the house, we went from a 10X50 trailer into a huge 3 br house on 5 acres, I was satisfied to just come home and clean and walk around for at least 2 years! My husband said to put a sign on the door " Check out time is 11:00 AM! we rarely have overnite company and I really need more space, maybe in the fall when it's cooler.
congrats on your new space.
since we can't afford to go around the world helping to fix up each other's space, maybe we could pitch it as a new reality tv show and get sponsers! of course we'd have to take turns being hostess!
what a dream

sandpat 08-11-2008 04:08 AM

Ya'll, please come to my house to organize and arrange my room! I've moved from on top of the washing machine in the laundry room to 1 corner of the guest room (We only have a 2 bdr. house  ). There just plain ISN"T enough room in this house!! But, either I'll come on the tour with ya'll  (hows that for inviting myself) or you can all stop on by here..although since I've taken the guest room....I have NO idea where any of you will sleep

Bulletin boards are fantastic!! Another option is to make one of those ribbon message boards. I helped Mum make one for her sewing room and I loved how it turned out! I plan to have one in my future sewing room!

Iīll bring my tent, and pitch in the garden or on that wonderful beach. okay

Elle

tlrnhi 08-11-2008 04:19 AM

I'm thinking that everyone comes here first. Since Guam is "where America's Day begins", then what better place to begin, right?? lol

Sandpat...just build an addition to your house! Problem solved!! :)

Aggi....that would be too cool! Visit you and a road trip too! :)

Those in other countries...once we gather everyone in the US, then it's off to the other corners of the world. Of course you wouldn't have been able to help out with the previous rooms, but by the time we get to you, their rooms will be needing a "re-do". :) So, then it's back to start all over again! :)

bebe 08-11-2008 04:22 AM

Here is a link to my sewing room http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/l...95.page#134309
Things I have or want to add
ceiling fan, standing and desk OTT light, sheer curtain or light color to let natural light in, shoe caddy for storage behind the door, cd/radio, closet space to hang WIP"s, wooden pant hangers, comfy rolling office chair, head phone telephone, and etc.

Happy Sewing !!!!!!!

Jean Mathews 08-12-2008 09:05 AM

Good luck, and be careful. I'm sure it will be great.

Mamagus 09-30-2008 12:19 PM

As of today the little sewing room is cleaned out. The ceiling is painted and the old doors are removed. I painted the trims that were left and removed the narrow, 32 year old door and floor trims.

I shop for wall paint and laminate flooring tomorrow!

I am SO happy!!!! I am turning into an HGTV type of girl!

Marcia 09-30-2008 12:40 PM

Yeah Lori--You may not be getting any quilting done right now, but just think how fun it is going to be in your NEW quilt room!!!! Wish I could come help you paint. Can't wait!!!

DA Mayer 09-30-2008 12:41 PM

beachlady 09-30-2008 01:33 PM
