What to do with leftover HST's????

1 Attachment(s)
Using Bonnie Hunter's method to get bonus HST's, I now have 44 5" HST's and 30 4" HST's leftover from the making of the quilt in this picture.

Does anybody know of any patterns that use HST's? or have any idea of what pattern to do with them? I'm thinking probably lap size...

here are a couple of patterns I have made with HST's.

Drue 11-12-2011 02:55 PM

What about making some pillows or pillow shams with them? Or maybe a throw or baby quilt?

YukonViv 11-12-2011 03:01 PM

I'm saving mine until I have enough to do a scrappy quilt...I was thinking along the lines of Barb's above, Barb they look amazing!!!!

littlehud 11-12-2011 03:33 PM

Your quilt is beautiful. If you save enough triangles Barbs sure is pretty.

frugalfabrics 11-12-2011 04:14 PM

beautiful quilts that you've made with the HST's...I'm thinking you could make some little doll quilts with the left overs or even small lap throws.

Hen3rietta 11-12-2011 04:15 PM

i just play around with the leftovers from my quilts until I find a pleasing pattern. By the way, your quilt is lovely.

sewingladydi 11-12-2011 04:46 PM

Pinwheel quilts are cute in any size or colors.

Jingle 11-12-2011 04:50 PM

I have lots of triangles, several sizes, I'm thinking of making some scrappy quilts with mine.

LadyElisabeth 11-12-2011 05:07 PM

You can always save them until a creative lightbulb brightens your day.

Mariposa 11-12-2011 05:10 PM

I save my misc. HST's. I usually make pinwheels to add to a scrappy quilt. Maybe do a row quilt-? Scrappy baskets are good too~ Lots of ideas out there! :)
Loretta- your top is very pretty!

Lady Crafter 11-12-2011 05:22 PM

Pinwheels are my first thought.

booklady 11-12-2011 07:04 PM

I save all of my leftover blocks in a plastic tub. When it's full, I'll see what I have to work it into a scrappy quilt top!

Lori S 11-12-2011 07:29 PM

I try to incorperate into the border of the quilt , since they already have coordinated fabrics.

MadQuilter 11-12-2011 07:48 PM

I just sent a batch of mini HSTs to Rhonda.

hevemi 11-13-2011 11:45 AM

I made a scrappy Carpenter's Star. My HSTs were smaller, stillhave plenty left.

OMG!!! That's it! The Carpenter's Star is on my bucket list! This would be perfect! Do you have a particular pattern that you can recommend?

This is absolutely PERFECT!!! The Carpenter's Star has been on my bucket list!

This is what I LOVE about this board! I knew someone would shout out a suggestion that would be perfect!

I found a free pattern on this board: http://www.quiltingboard.com/links-r...e-t122357.html

I've already printed it out! All of my HST's are color/cream, so I will have to make a few more that are color/color...but it should use up 38 or so of the 44 HST's I already have! :)

Thanks so much to everyone for your suggestions!

I'd really like to see a picture of your scrappy Carpenter's Star! :)

nativetexan 11-13-2011 01:24 PM

that is the most huge photo i've ever seen online!!!

Rose L 11-13-2011 01:29 PM

Those are large ones. What about quartering some of them? You'd get two smaller HST's and two small solid blocks. Then play around with arrangements of both the large blocks and the small ones to form a new design. Could be lots of fun!

aorlflood 11-13-2011 08:25 PM

Here is what I've come up for the Carpenter's Star. What do you think?

aorlflood 11-13-2011 08:38 PM

I don't know why it's not uploading my picture. :(

janquilts'ncrochets 11-13-2011 09:01 PM

I really like both your quilts. That's alot of hst's... Love the colors.

Barb, by any chance did your second quilt shown come from a book "Spectacular Scraps" by Judy Hooworth and Margaret Rolfe? It is a book I really love. It has a ton of patterns, all of which only use HST's. The patterns are developed by your choice of fabrics, and by the placement of darks and lights. As soon as I saw it, I thought of this book. Anyway, both are beautiful, and they do show how pretty quilts can be just using HST's.

I really like your design is there instructions/pattern for the layout ??? This would be perfect to make one of my sons ...

lynndianne 11-14-2011 05:43 AM

You could always use them to do a border on another scrapy quilt/table runner.

LOVE this idea!!! I would incorporate into border - maybe a flying geese? or just line them up along edge. Also matching pillow shams would be a great idea - if its a lapsize quilt you could always made a "bag" for it using your leftovers.

I do like the scrappy quilts shown also. Let us know what you decide

What pattern did you use for this - Just love it- pm if you can - probably wont find this back lol thanks!!!

SandScraps 11-14-2011 06:04 AM

Any inspiration from the different lay outs for log cabins? Love the soft colours in the quilt.

aorlflood 11-14-2011 06:15 AM

Some people have asked for the name of the original quilt...

The original quilt was made from a pattern called Stars Over the Prairie and was in a book called By Request put out by Gathering Friends.

It was very fun and easy to make and used up a LOT of scraps!

joyce888 11-14-2011 02:23 PM

Love the second one!

I ended up making this flimsy that will, eventually get borders and then made into a baby quilt. It's a scrappy Carpenter's Star.

KR 11-15-2011 08:23 AM

You could use them in a border. Or make table runners, doll quilts, mug rugs, etc.

oksewglad 11-21-2011 03:40 PM

Looks like you came up with a great solution! Very nice

oksewglad 11-22-2011 07:28 PM

I just posted this thread. These were all made from left over HST's from many different projects.

Enjoy

I love your quilts. good use of HSTs

soccertxi 11-23-2011 06:56 AM

I sew mine together and make flying geese. I'm planning to 'TRY' to use up all my left over pieces and orphan blocks in a quilt in Jan. I might do it as a sew along!
