I think controlled scraps. I do not care for sewing everything randomly together. And yes, I buy scraps or FQ for scrap quilts all the time.

to me scrappy is a mish-mosh of left over fabric scraps whether it be controlled scrappy (strategically placed) or random placement..

I love the scrappy look. I remember my great aunt having a scrappy quilt, it was a hodge podge of colors and prints. Nothing planned. Just various pieces sewn together. If I ever get to do one, I think I will do the same.

To me, a scrappy quilt could be any traditional pattern, but must have lots and lots of different prints.

I have a plastic bin that is my scrap bag. Some if my scrap bag quilts are chosen out of this. If the block is a two color block, I try to get them paired up out if my scrap bag. Now, all of the leftovers get cut into 1.5" strips from 1" to ?"'s. sometimes I get lucky and have them WOF. These are going into several of Gylene Fitzgeralds Pineapple trash blocks. I am in love with these blocks. They are so easy, fast and make a gorgeous pineapple quilt that is as easy as a 9 patch.
So, I guess I control most of my scrap bag quilts except for the pineapples. I rarely go out and buy for A quilt. I do have to buy neutrals. I seem to go thru those faster. I just made my first quilt using many different neutral backgrounds. It was hard for me as I prefer the same background throughout the quilt. However, it turned out great and I like the older effect it gives to the quilt and the neutrals all came out if my scrap bag.

i think of the hodge podge of colors. I also do a controlled scrappy with various blends of the same color as one fabric.

For me its any left over fabrics not large enough to be included in a regular quilt.

What does a "Gylene Fitzgeralds Pineapple" trash block look like?

I love doing scrappy, being able to pull from my stash only, it feels like a "free" quilt. I try to make the scrappy quilt with an appropriate pattern.
