I've started several crumb blocks because I hate to throw out fabric. My grandmother went through the Depression and she saved everything. When she passed away and I watched my mom and her siblings having to sort through all her things, I decided I would never be a hoarder of anything. So, I feel the need to use up my crumbs before they get out of control. Unfortunately, I have several crumb blocks, but no finished quilts from them. One of these days, I will be the one donating them to the "orphan" box, I fear. At least I won't feel like they went to waste or got stuffed in a pillow somewhere.

How wonderful you can share your love with other's dislikes! I like all phases of quilting, so I guess I'm selfish, not sharing! i know people who would definitely invite you over to do their cutting for them!
|
i have moved from "fabriholic" to "fabrimaniac". welcome to the club. there is no treatment, but that of more fabric and smaller pieces...
btw--it takes lots of work to achieve "fabrimaniac". wear it proudly. |

I say you are someone who knows how to be happy in you own skin. Do what you enjoy.

I 'm happy to know that there is another person in the world who likes to piece mindless crumb or string blocks. I have yards and yards of fabric, but I 'd much rather put together those small scraps to make a bigger block. Maybe it because I was a depression baby and had "waste not, want not" pounded into me.
|
I completely understand where you come from! So you aren't alone. I have scraps cut in little bags.
|
Cute! Ditto!

Ladies, I saw the other day where a gal uses the big bowl-shaped coffee filters--the cheap ones--to piece her little scraps or strings. Just flatten out, then start in the center, and then sew and flip the pieces across, even at varying angles, until the surface is covered. Next, make a template out of cardboard in the largest square you can get by placing on top of the completed "filter". Trace around the square, cut out, then sew the squares together or sew using sashing strips. I understand if you wet the sewn filter it will come off the back of the pieced square easier. I haven't tried this myself but am anxious to try it.

You could also use paper. It tears away easily. Couldn't you make circles and applique them to a square of fabric. Alternate between circles and squares.
Oh, there I go again with more ideas and now I want to try it. I love the scraps, they are so colorful. On Mossuri Quilt show they have where you make a swuare using strips and then cut a circle from it and use the cirlce for one blocks and use the outside tht is left over for another block where you could do applique. This is what gave me the idea but why couldn't you do it with small scraps also. |
You are creative. One who invisions what can be done where many can not- take pride in it.

thank you for your work you and your friends do

Fortunately my group I sew with has several people who don't like to cut, and absolutely love to find enough blocks in our orphan block box to put together and make a quilt. And we have several long armers who do the quilting of the soldier quilts. Over the last seveal years I've made several hundred 6" crumb blocks. I find it very relaxing but another person has collected all the small scraps from our group to use as stuffing for pet beds for shelters. So now I'm doing strips.[/quote] WHY WOULD YOUR GROUP USE THESE SCRAPS FOR PET BED STUFFING WHEN YOU WERE MAKING QUILTS FOR GIs? WHICH SEEMS THAT IT WOULD BE SO MUCH MORE A GENEROUS AND GRACIOUS CONTRIBUTION TO A VERY WORTHY CAUSE TO CONTINUE WITH THE QUILTS. I AM SURE THAT IF YOU REQUESTED, YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET SOME CRUMBS FROM SOME OF OUR MEMBERS HERE SO THAT OUR GIs WOULD CONTINUE TO GET WARMTH FROM YOUR LABOR OF LOVE. |

Oh, a better explaination of scraps is in need. You can't phsyically sew anything less then 3/4" you know, the 1/4" seams all around and that's being pretty generous because my 1/4" seams might be a hair bigger, so anything less then about 1" goes into the scrap bag for pet bedding. The lady who makes the beds sorts through all the scraps she receives , trims up the pieces and sorts them by size and color and shares with the scrappy sewers in her area all the pieces that are not really bedding material. So it doesn't go to waste. And I'm happy because they are not at my house making me feel guilty that I'm cutting my yardage to make a quilt when my scrap bag is so full. Occassionaly I put a note on my freecycle group saying come take my scraps. then I feel so free because it's all gone and I didn't throw it away. |

Now I read all of these newsletter, but some how missed understanding what a "crumb block " is. Can someone enlighten me, I assume that it's a good use for fabric scraps. Thank you in advance.

Back on page 3, I posted an explaination and several photos. If you have a slow computer it may take awhile for the photos to pop up.
Bonnie of Quiltville.com has a nice tutorial. http://www.quiltville.com/crumbs.shtml |
Complimentary skills are great!

You're a free spirit. You go gal!

YOU WOULD BE A BLESSING IN MY HOME. I WOULD TAG YOU AS A CUT-UP

I call that a person who enjoys her art of playing with material. Think of how you are helping so many others. I make blocks and provide children the instructions and how they can use them and make other things. One little girl made her barbie doll a pillow and a small quilt. She was 6. They went on to show other children how to do this and after 3 yrs are still doing surprising gifts with what they learned.

We all like different things which works out really well to get together and create a quilt. Happy cutting. Sue

I don't know but I don't like cutting or quilting/sandwiching either. Love to foundation/strip piece tho!!!

I don't like to make quilt tops, only like to quilt. I don't like to sew, only like to quilt. I don't like to cut, only like to quilt.
Surprisingly enough, I don't mind pressing or basting too much. I'm still terrible at binding, but good at FMQ! I'm looking for someone to swap with me. Send me two tops and I'll and send one back to you, quilted!! |
