I have a bunch of stuff I want to do, but just can't seem to get motivated to get going!

Maybe it's the weather.... should I try putting palm trees and sand and sun lamps in the sewing room? Maybe with a bit of ocean mood music?

mom-6 02-12-2011 10:37 PM

Sounds like a plan to me!

sewwhat85 02-12-2011 10:45 PM

that sounds great

Start with something small that you can do quickly. Or take time to clean up your space and you will see something that says "work on me!" Let us know how it goes.

carolaug 02-13-2011 12:38 AM

For me its a reason...making a quilt that reminds me of a person...some of their likes or part of there era. Its hard to get into it with out a reason for doing it though. My friend is making small quilts for the hostipal. They do not want batting. Just cotton simple tops and flannel bottoms. I am making a quilt for my son with a broken leg...I need to give myself a deadline...it had to get modivated...winter...I also signed up for a class so that will keep me going and I am hoping to learn a few tricks along the way. Also when ever I buy a new Go die it modivates me to make one. But I am getting less and less modivated with this yucky weather...come on Spring...melt this snow away.

craftybear 02-13-2011 12:47 AM

you know I am the same way right now just can't get motivated to do much in quilting and my crafts

I am so tired of cold, snowy weather,

hurry up spring weather (at least get the snow to start melting here in central Indiana)

plus I am busy getting the things ready for our tax lady, will be glad when that is all done so I can have fun again in making quilted projects and crafts

Tropical 02-13-2011 12:57 AM

For me it is wanting to give a gift to someone I love.

zennia 02-13-2011 01:07 AM

Wish I knew the answer to this. You would think with it being winter we would be up to our eyeballs in fabric and thread but just not in the mood. I have been carring the same project around for 2 weeks without taking it out of the bag.

Becky Crafts 02-13-2011 01:29 AM

I have just the opposite problem. I live in sunny Florida & I want to quilt like crazy, but have been having so much fun with my quilting, that my carpal tunnel has been acting up bad, so have to take it real slow and easy. I'm making a play mat for our DGS's for next Christmas & it's 2 yards long. I used felted pellon instead of batting so it's not as thick & am having a blast with it, but my hands go numb & arms hurt.

sassyg 02-13-2011 01:58 AM

You all are such an inspriation,no matter what the weather is like, it's the thought that counts.Mentally we all are doing something we like. Just think one day there will come the time when we can't break away from the sewing machine or the handwork and we will be able to say boy I did a good job.
I just love you all.

quiltsillysandi 02-13-2011 03:16 AM

I went through about a two month period where I had no desire to look at my machine, much less sew, or do anything creative....I was stuck in a rut...So I started looking a new techniques that were interesting and I haven't looked back....One was hot ribbon art applique (which I LOVE) and that spurred an interest in card making.....and the rest is history.....the creative juices are back flowing..... I've got three quilts going and I just went to work one day a week for our local quilt shop as well...I'm a happy camper...:)

quiltsillysandi 02-13-2011 03:17 AM

PS.....Love your Aussie.....I've had a couple over the years...Great dogs!

Marion Jean 02-13-2011 03:47 AM

Sometimes I'll just sit down and start looking through my quilt books and magazines to find inspiration. Also if I attend a guild meeting or a class, that seems to put me in a sewing mood. And sometimes I just like to play with my stash, kind of like a kid with a toy chest LOL

deema 02-13-2011 04:18 AM

I usually do something quick, simple and fun. That gets me back into my groove most of the time. I feel you - I'm lacking motivation on a current project. I don't think I've been in my "dungeon" (sewing space in the basement) for at least a week...maybe two! Today I'm going to get down there and do a quicky Valentine's day project for my daughter's teacher, hopefully that will be my motivational moment.

gal288 02-13-2011 04:37 AM

Go on the board & look around!! That usually does it.

scrapykate 02-13-2011 04:42 AM

I often go on the tutorial section of this board and find something I want to try and that gets me geared back up. I found some nice blocks that I tried and then made the backing of a quilt I need to finish. Now the quilt is ready to be quilted. The sun is out and snow is melting Yeah!!

earlylace 02-13-2011 04:46 AM

just start paging through you quilt books and mags, you will get the itch really fast!

Hen3rietta 02-13-2011 04:52 AM

I go with the flow rather than force it. I've always had two or three or six different types of projects going on at the same time. One might be a quilt, another something knitted and maybe even a woodworking project around the house. Sometime one takes over for quite a while, but for me that's okay because these are things I do for pleasure.

Jenson 02-13-2011 05:03 AM

I too suffer with quilters block. I looked at my underground railroad blocks and the story behing them and thought if the slaves can have some go int them then so can I. So taday is the beginning of the new me. Working 4 days a week does sometimes hamper my plans, but I always will have the weekends. I also go on quilting retreats twice yearly to Scarborouhg and that seems to get me going again.

There is always hope

quiltinghere 02-13-2011 05:09 AM

I experience that lull in quilting often - could be the weather or just life in general. When it happens I clean something - the house or the sewing area. After a while I realize that I'm tired of cleaning and need a break and I'm in the mood to sew again.

AND

I can sew with a clean house and better yet a clean sewing area! No guilt involved! Double benefits!

pumpkinpatchquilter 02-13-2011 05:11 AM

When I'm trying to get inspired I hit the blogs and see what other quilters are doing, hop on here and flip through the pictures and tutorials section, or go buy some fabric!!! Generally I have so many things that I want to make or do that I have to stay OFF of sites like this or else I start another project! ;)

PunkQuilter 02-13-2011 05:26 AM

Like most other quilters, I usually have a few projects in the works. Sometimes it's as simple as figuring out which part of the process I feel like doing the most. Cleaning/tidying my sewing can be self motivating. Every artist, wether it's quilts, writing, clay, music has lulls in creative energy.

feffertim 02-13-2011 06:01 AM

I get up, look at the dust bunnies and the dishes in the sink and am so motivated to quilt.

Schoolmarm 02-13-2011 06:04 AM

I browse the board and my fabrics.
Sometimes though I focus on cutting, sewing the top, or quilting of several small quilts, all at the same time. Once my finger tips get too sore to quilt, (I can't seem to use a thimble to save my fingers!)then I work on other processes.

raptureready 02-13-2011 06:21 AM

Getting a new quilting book, new fabric, a new pattern, or sometimes just getting on here and looking at everyone's posts helps me. You've just had too much snow, ice, and cold weather. That plus the Christmas rush being over effects a lot of us. It just takes a while to get back into it.

Maggie_1963 02-13-2011 06:36 AM

I go through periods of that too, I clean my room, then try to make a small project for myself, it usually leads to embellishing, which I love, and that gets the creativeness flowing again!

hairquilt 02-13-2011 07:00 AM

Love snow days from work because I can knock out 2 or 3 tops. Can't wait to retire.Love this board & you ladies

justwannaquilt 02-13-2011 07:03 AM

LOL I try to not get out of the mood! If I get out of the mood for awhile you can bet on it being a LONG while. At least several weeks if not a couple months! Its hard for me to get back into it after being blah!

kateyb 02-13-2011 07:12 AM

I find a good book to read. Usually by the time I'm done reading I'm ready to quilt again.

carolaug 02-13-2011 08:05 AM

Well I going to go to the muesum today with the hubby,,,,they are doing a special on quilts and history of NH quilts, many displays. Maybe I will get in the mood to quilt when I get back.

the above idea plus a glass of wine.

DawnMarie 02-13-2011 09:55 AM

I know what you mean. I'm bored out of my mind with it right now. I think it's because I'm stuck on a project that's just not working the way it's supposed to.
I think I'm going to have to work on a different project for a little while and come back to this one.
It's just making me mad.
I think a new project that I can finish is the way to get me motivated again.

quilter1943 02-13-2011 10:19 AM

I golf a lot and sense I quilt much better than I golf, it really makes me want to get back to my sewing room.

Mary M 02-13-2011 10:27 AM

Sometimes I just need to sit down with a new pattern and I can get very motivted to then finish it....well at least the piecing for I still not crazy about the quilting part. Working with bright coolors is also helpful. I think it is the fatigue I get fibrmyalgia that slows me down and makes it more difficult to always be ready to quilt. I am thankful that I can still sew for I know life without sewing would be bad.
