When you are battling with borders and you don't have enough material and you know that you won't find anymore.

If you have scraps left from the quilt, can you piece a boarder? Can you find something else that will go with it? Post a pic, maybe someone here has it!

I would find a fabric that was so close it would not make a difference and perhaps add to the quilt's personality. The other school of thought would be to add a multi-colored border and sashings. These are really fun and nice.

Sometimes a border of two fabrics that complement the quilt or were used in the quilt works really well. Top and one side of one fabric and other side and bottom of the other fabric.
Also, if you have just enough for the exact width and length of the main portion of the quilt, cornerstones can be used to complete the quilt.

I was not good at geomentry and don't know the names for shapes except squares and triangles. That said.
I have had the same problem and I pieced it in the center with the shape that looks like a triangle with the top cut off. Depending on the design of the top you could repeat the shapes to piece the border. For instance if the center is squares you might do some smaller square blocks to add length. Or some diagonal pieces in the center. Or two or three narrow strips in the center like rain fence.

A picture or name of your design would help.

Corner stones, and center stones too, help stretch out those border fabrics :D:D:D

Here is an example for you. Scroll down to the snowman quilt. It even has two different colors of fushia pink on the frame borders around the snowmen. Two strips of one color on top and the one side and two very closly matching on the bottom and other side.

I also wanted to use the scrappy left over fabrics in the rest of the quilt, so I fussed with them until I founs a pleasing effect.

I "break the Frame'"so to speak. Instead of having a contiuious fabric all around , I put a compimentaly fabric in the middle of each border strip( all four sides) , usually the lenght of about three of the blocks or more ( always an odd number of blocks, it just looks more ..intended) . I have also seen in done where the first intended fabric is used on half of the top and half of one side , and then contiuning with other fabrics in the same manner, each fabric only consuming half of two continious sides.

The photo isn't very good but I was going to do the yellow border which I have enough fabric for,but not enough of the Turqouises, and I wonder if I peice the turqouise would it look odd,I have enough of the cream.

Those are jewel tones and you should be able to find something that would look good with it. I would border it and plain border not a pieced one. It is truly a beautiful quilt. Can't wait to see it finished.

Do you have enough of the dark blue? How big does it have to be? If you have enough dark blue, leave it at that length. If you want it bigger then add the two turqouises on opposite sides of quilt, or the darker turqouise and the yellow on opposie sides of the quilt.

So let me get this straight...you've completed the dark blue border, you have enough of the yellow to do that border, the two turquoises you do not have enough to do a whole border of either one of them...right?

How close are you to having enough of either of the turquioses?

Hi --I have enough of the dark yellow,not quite enough of light yellow in long lenghts,but I can piece it,so what I have now been thinking is to do. If I can explain this,is do one top and one side dark yellow then the bottom and one side light yellow---same with the blues the add the last border using the white on cream.
I wanted it to go on the top of a double bed--not sure what that size is in US
what do you think? I don't have enough dark blue left either
