Year before last everyone got fleece bathrobes with their favorite team logo on the back. Last year they got team quilts YUK 4 cowboys quilts. This year they have requested foot warmer socks again. Did those 5 years ago and they have worn them out. Men are much easier than woman, because no one usually makes anything for them they really appreciate if its personalized someway. Bought each of my 4 sons beautiful white dress shirts, 3 each, and put their monogram on the cuff. They went wild over those, now everytime they buy shirts, they come to Mom for monogram first.

I made my son a pieced quilt (can't remember which one) but I put leaves and acorn appliques in the borders. I also made him a wall hanging of a moose with it's reflection. It is a McKenna Ryan. When I Skype with him I can see it on his wall.

Several years ago, before my DH quit smoking, he had to go out on the backporch to smoke. When it got cold he asked me to make him a "smoking quilt". I told him that I had heard of smoking jackets but never "smoking quilts". For my son I made him a quilt with several Florida Gator heads around the border as if it was swimming low in the water. For the backing I pieced about 15 t-shirts from his fraternity activities along with scraps of the front fabric. He LOVED it. He even to it to Massachusetts to show his college roommate.

Thanks for all the great ideas for men. That really gets me thinking.

I am in the process of collecting worn jeans for projects for the guys. Grandpa gets a lap robe, Dad a caddy for the arm of his recliner to hold TV guide and remote, etc., for my son in college it is a twin size quilt backed with flannel. The hard part is gathering up all the old levis...all colors and hues work well.
Hope there is something here you can use.

sewnsewer2 06-22-2010 11:29 AM

How about a shave bag for travel?

cbuchanan 06-22-2010 11:30 AM

How about large lap quilts with fabric from their university or favorite sports team.

Sew them together, cut a decorative edge and you have the perfect blanket for watching tv, camping or going to the game. They look great, wash well and if you get them on sale they are relatively inexpressive.

Thanks bobstassi - It's good to get an opinion from one of your sex. You know what you like!

I like to make a BIG quilt. I have easy instructions for what I call a 'guy quilt'. I used denim looking cotton fabric. I've made the same quilt about five times. Always the denim looking fabric with two other fabrics.

Aunt Zaz 06-22-2010 11:39 AM

Make a quilt .I have made 2 for my son and a carpenter star for my husband. I made it in his favorite blue and scattered some "carpenter fabric " throughout if he is in his recliner his quilt is on him! I made a quilt for my nephew when he went to Iraq he wanted it on his bed before his Mom could get it washed.

Aunt Zaz 06-22-2010 11:49 AM

Wow! This wrench quilt will be #3 for my son He works on prototype equipment for a major company and definitely owns alot of wrenches. Christmas present solved.

sabrinaquilts 06-22-2010 03:25 PM

I have four boys so I know what you mean. I make pillowcases for them for Christmas and for their birthdays. You can find some real simple free patterns and they can be sewn quickly. I bet you can even find fabrics in your stash that they will love. The younger ones will love the novelty prints. The older boys might like some with pin-up girls or cars on them. I make my husband several with pin-up girls and he got a big chuckle out of them.

Lilrain 06-22-2010 03:40 PM

I have made several quilts for men using batiks, and alos made a couple with pillow panels. I frame the panels and then make them into a quilt

Annz 06-22-2010 04:52 PM

For your DH a small quilt that will sit on the back of his favorite chair that is just basically for his head to rest on (approximately 30 by 23). It makes them feel so special even though we know we are actually protecting the back of his favorite chair.

shelrox 06-22-2010 04:56 PM

I have a man here that is still hounding me for his quilt that i started collecting fabrics for 2 years ago. He said recently Iw ill never see it will I? I cant help it I am waiting till I have what I feel is correct. I have found Men love lap sized quilts or a little bigger to watch tv in but not be too wrapped up

When I dragged my DH into a LQS while on vacation, he went nuts over a WW2 planes panel...so I ended up making him the quilt pictured below (it kind of grew). My LAQer did a great job with it.

Soooo I'm suggesting that you can probably buy fabric related to one of his interests.

Can you post a picture of his quilt. My grandson is also an avid Mets fan and wants one for Christmas. TY

Many of the men in my family are quite fond of couch quilts with their favorite sports team as the theme. Most men like to take naps while they are "watching the tv" Have you ever heard the phrase "just resting my eyes" HaHA

mom-6 06-22-2010 06:18 PM

I haven't yet made quilts for my big guys, but for the 12 & under ones I've done basically crib size throws out of 2-1/2" squares in 1)a variety of greens/beiges for a sort of camo effect, 2)similar green/beige but creating a light color X blending to the green at the edges, 3)red/black/white diagonal stripe design of bandana fabric, flames fabric, check, swirly print. I've also done the fabric panels (Spiderman, Cars, etc.) and backed with a solid fleece. All have been very well received. Oh and I did do a flying eagle panel wall hanging for one of my then teenage guys when he graduated from HS.

I made this Dallas Cowboys pillow for my brother and now I have orders for several more for different teams. I also made a lap size blanket out of the Cowboys themed fleece fabric to go with it, just added the binding on the edges.

You could do something similar for their hobbies.

forgot to say that this is sized for a normal size pillow and it has a Velcro closure on the back (in the middle, long ways) so that it can be removed and washed.

When my grandson was small, I made him a quilt with a cheater fabric that had roads, an airport, trees, etc. on it. I added fabric with various types of transportation to make it big enough for a twin bed. In the same box I added a few Matchbox cars. He played on that poor quilt driving the cars around on the road so much that I had to make more than one repair. He would haul it to my house for Friday Night Sleepovers (a regular thing for our grandbebes)until finally he said he was too big and left it at my house. It's one we now use as a play mat for the new grandbebes, so it's been loved by lots of kids.

My mother quilted a quilt for my son's bed, out of denim and bandanna print. He was 18 and loved it.

The men in my life have been asking me to make them quilted sleeping bags.

adrianlee 06-22-2010 08:45 PM

For the men in my life, hubby, son and friends: quilts, flannel pillowcases in their favorite colors. Also potholders that will fit their size of hands. Home baked cookies, these can be made and frozen till the holiday. I have also made slippers, lots of neat patterns that aren't all that hard to sew. And as a fun stocking stuffer for the more 'worldly older guy', Blue M&M candies in a pill bottle and a note "From Santa". Also monogrammed bath towels, the letters are easy to sew and you actually don't need an embroildery machine to do it.

I have made my son two quilts, a lap and a bed(twin) size. The bed is purples (his favorite color) and the lap is RW&B stars with snowballs between. I made my grandson a lap and am working on a twin size for him using the pattern eye of the storm. Both of them love getting my quilts.
My sis made her son a tie quilt--he collected the ties. She made her husband a RW&B quilt and is finishing up one that shows his military career.

amalia64 06-22-2010 11:21 PM

my husband asked me again for another apron, he loves to grill and cook, and my son likes to have matching aprons, potholder, kitchen towels.

I asked dh if he played cowboys when he was little, of course he did. So I set aside some cowboy fabric and will make him one to take back to his childhood days. SHHHHH don't tell him , it will be for Christmas, not sure if it is this year or next. Got to get started on it soon if this year.

Mountain deb, have you seen the Roy Rogers fabrics? They pretty neat. My husband loves the old TV westerns and I'm thinking of collecting the cowboy fabrics too, make a lap quilt for when he watchs TV in the winter.

ruthieg 06-23-2010 06:39 AM

For the men in my life I use a theme fabric and a 4 patch or a double 4 patch. As I have become better at quilting, I use plaids and checks (usually fat quarters) and make them into a star quilt of some kind.

I just finished a "Turning Twenties . . . Again" quilt for a special guy in our family. He loves history and since next year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, these fabrics (and the timing) seemed appropriate. It looks very masculine. There are alot of CW fabrics out there right now to commemorate the upcoming anniversary.

My DNephew didn' care if it was girly cause he had a wife and daughters. He said his whole life was girly. He just wanted a quilt.

I am making him one with skulls on it cause all his t-shirts have some type of skulls on it.

bjdemir 06-23-2010 02:38 PM

I just finished an Eagle wall hanging for Hubby for father's day. I have also made a memory quilt for a man out of his father's old shirts. It turned out surpisingly great. Did some flying geese and put a couple of houses or cabins on. I was pleasantly surprised. The back was large squares and rectangles sashed with dark green flannel as the back was flannel shirts and the front was cotton.

one year i made them all quilted outdoor vests
and when i started making everyone fleece socks (which sell in lands end catalogs for $18-$24 a pair) not only did everyone love them but a couple of the guys asked if i would make them 6 more pair...they wanted a pair for every day of the week ;)
of course, if you live in a warm climate they probably don't want fleece socks
