are "art quilts" really quilts or just FIBER art?
should fabrics be mixed? as in cotton, poly, satin, etc as for quilt police...there are non..but there are true TEXTILE reasons to do certain things and there are REAL health reasons to do other things! |

As for most controversial subject, I think it would be: how much quilting is too much? But I believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. OK, I'll stop quoting people now.... Linda |
Having not read the entire thread...my opinion:
prewash or not; steam or not; press open seams or to the side These seem to be the most highly discussed subjects of which I'm aware. |

i even heard people argue at the quilt show in PA that art quilts shouldn't be allowed into the show because they aren't really quilts. then the next big one is computer quilting vs machine free motion quilting. many people want computer quilting to be a different category so it doesn't compete against all hand guided free motion quilting. |
Hmmmm, I'm going to get in trouble for this one. For me it's been the controversy over another group starting over doing the Farmers Wife Sampler. I really want to work on this quilt with a group. Still hoping it could happen.

I guess I'll have to say..like others.. My quilt, My way...Of course, there is no other way ....JUST JOKING

Using panels as/within quilts.
Fine by me.... there are some beautiful and whimsical panels out there. To each his/her own! ;-) |

Losing "regular" status.
(This is a fun thread!) |
My 90 year old Grand Aunt who is still quilting away, suggests you do it the way YOU like.

I agree that the art quilts versus trad quilts is a biggy. I would also add debates over 'history' versus myth, such as the Underground Railroad debate recently and the Amish deliberate mistake thing - true or not true? And this topic is in danger of opening up a bazillion cans of worms! |

1. Machine v. Hand-quilting
2. Wash or don't wash 3. The correct way to fix the original poster's problem, regardless of whether or not the problem has already been fixed by the board member you are disagreeing with. 4. Feathers! I don't mind the controversial topics, though. I like to sit and read them and make cat-fighting noises. :D |
A BIG can of worms   , but wouldn't quilting be so boring if we all only did things one way. Come to think of it life would be pretty boring if we all liked the same thing, I think we should all agree to disagree

Well got to put in my 2 cents worth, 1 cent maybe. Unless your quilt is being judged in a show, what ever methods you use to get your quilt finished, is owned by you the maker of said quilt. Your quilt can only be judged by the artist that made it. I like seeing all the quilts posted, sometimes they spark creativity in me. I really don't pay attention to people saying what should and should not be done. Fabric is our painters paper in a sense. what we manipulate it into is our art. quilters are artists. we make masterpieces.
|
How about the age children start cutting with a rotary cutter and sewing on a machine? Some say, for example, 8 year olds are ok and others say never before age 18.
Also agree with prewash and no prewash. |

It is my observation that quilters are truly artists who use fabric (and other things) to create their art work. I've worked with both writers and visual artists in one capacity or another most of my life. The one thing I can say about them, as a generalization, is that they feel strongly about their work, and have strong opinions about it. The fact that a group of Quilters/Artists have strong opinions about the nature of their artistic endeavors, and at times with clash over them, is only to be expected. Oh, yes, and artists are highly individualistic, which can be seen in both their work, and in their attitudes: "My Quilt, My Way!" Nothing surprising about that. If we can only look at it from this perspective, then these little "spats" over how things are done, are really nothing but clashes that should be expected among a group of such talented people. Just tell them how you do something, but don't try to convince them that your way is the only way, and things should go smoother around here. Although I must admit, I do like a bit of "spitfire" every now and again! Keeps things interesting!

"Machines, vintage vs the newer ones."
This was the first one that came to mind. |

It was a huge upgrade for me from a straight stich only machine and all I could afford. Kicked my friend's Pfaff's machine butt when we were collaborating on a rag quilt. |

Expressing 'our opinions' shouldn't step on top of other's opinions... and that is my opinion!   When I first joined this board I used to jump in on things like prewash/no wash, etc. but now I just read them and smile! :-D |

[quote=Katy]We are not talking moral choices here, not political or even religious. We are talking what do you perceive as the most hotly debated subject in your part or in the whole of the quilting world?
To pre wash or not to pre wash... do you iron or press? Hand vs. Machine quilting... Use spray starch or not? Join a quilt guild or not? Steam or not? Stress over imperfections or apply the 20 mile rule( if it can't be noticed when driving by at 20 miles an hour it does not count) I don't know, but it sometimes seems that just about any thing on your list can get us going  |
To wash or not to wash.

Pre-wash or not. I do and I don't.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to conceal my weapon!

binding by hand or machine. I do mine by machine, love the hand sewn look but I stink at it and my hands hurt.
