What Do You Use?

Hi To All !

I am planning on making a SUMMER Bedspread / Quilt. I know I want to use White Cotton Eyelet and A denim Eyelet for the top. I haven't decided on the backing yet,. But my problem is finding a LIGHT WEIGHT batting. I always use 100 % cotton Warm N Natural. But it's all too heavy for the summertime. ( Cincinnati, Ohio )

If you can think of something. I would appreciate it greatly. I'm starting to wonder if I just use " Moda White " for the batting :-)

Try Dream Request. thin poly batting. And be sure to back your eyelet with something.

You could use flannel or maybe even just the backing and no batting. For summer baby gifts I've used just seersucker for top and backing.

Thank You Both!!! I'm checking out lots of different things.

Mom-6 ...... I have thought of using no batting. :-)

Holice .... Yes... I need to find a nice white to back the eyelet. Probably just White Kona.

Here in AZ we find using a good quality flannel works well for a summer quilt. I have been looking for sheet blankets, but can not find them anywhere. Does anyone else remember sheet blankets we used in the summer on our beds? That was what we used on our beds in NY in the summer. If I am remembering correctly, they were made of a light weight flannel. Am I right? They would also work in place of regular batting.

Vermont Country Store still sells flannel sheet blankets. I love their catalog for a lot of old time goodies.

I used flannel for a lap quilt for a friend and it turned out great. Not too heavy, just right for lounging.

Just yesterday I used flannel for the batting for a summer quilt, first time for one of my-own-use quilts. I already love it and it isn't even finished quilted yet!

My grandmother made summer quilts without batting of any kind. I haven't tried that yet.

If using eyelet on top that will need something behind it, why not back it with fleece of flannel with no batt? The eyelet would show whatever colour backing you have through the little holes.

For summer quilts, I would use a very thin flannel or non at all.

For very light weight quilts , I like cream white , or cream rose. But do check the recommended stitch distance before making a final selection.

Thank You All!

My daughter in CA prefers the Quilter's Dream. DREAM ORIENT it has silk, bamboo, cotton and eucalyptus fibers in it. So soft and light weight.

I love using flannel for batting for summer or winter quilts -- it holds up extremely well (especially for baby quilts), and it wrinkles up nicely when the quilt is washed, too. I don't have to worry about batting bunching up, either. I agree with Tartan - a nice white flannel would work very well behind the eyelet -- or even a very pale yellow, green or pink behind the eyelet would also be nice.

I have been looking and looking also! We live in Florida and the one we have on our bed we've used for years- it's falling apart! I've gotten some good flannel to make one but it is much denser and thicker than what we have. Could use it for a couple of winter months but not most of the year. Will watch this for a hoped for source!

:-) Thanks to all!

The summer quilt I made has no batting, just backing.

Dragonomine 03-14-2013 04:02 AM

Summer quilts I've used sheets or nothing at all.

Oma66, I remember sheet blankets. My mom still has some! You could use a regular flannel sheet. They were on sale last month, but you still might find some at Ross DFL or one of those type of stores.

I use Thermore light. It is also great in clothing where you want darts, zippers and buttonholes. Combined with organza for a backing it can't be beat.

mariolkapolka 03-14-2013 06:20 AM

I use flannel only as a batting and it works great since I only do serger and rag quilts - not to hard on either of my machines.

Ther are always people using these in my area of Ontario Canada so I know they are still around. There --I am now in Florida --I see them in colors and while with stripes were the older version. Available in fall often so maybe if I see them for sale I should buy some . If I find them I will try and write a post here for everyone. Otherwise try
Vermont Country Store.

I think you mean Ibex blankets. You can find them on http://cantexdistribution.com.vpaspw...annel-Blanket/. I have a few in my linen closet and use them for many different purposes. They would probably make great "batting" for a summer quilt.

betsyinoz13 03-15-2013 12:51 AM

I have made light weight quilts using felt (craft felt) it is sold by the yard and I believe it is 72" wide.

CMARAS1234 03-17-2013 01:57 PM

I highly recommend flannel for the backing na summer quilt, with no batting, use light flannel and prewash as it will shrink. cmaras

I have never heard of an Ibex blanket. I did go one line and saw the blanket. It says it is a heavy weight and that is not what we used when I was a child, but they look like they would make for a great batting. Thanks for the information. I will keep it in mind. The cost is $25.00 which is more than what I normally spend on batting (on sale of course) but I do like the looks of the blanket.
