What do you use......

What do you use to mark designs on your quilt pieces. I'm a new hand quilter and need to mark designs on my quilt pieces but it needs to be something that will come out when washed. What do you suggest?

I use Sewline pencils....and often use a sliver of soap on dark fabrics. I use a box cutter to carefully shave a clean edge on the soap when it wears down.

I used to always use the blue washout markers, but so many on this board said they used the kids' Crayola washable markers that I just had to try. I was nervous about it, but just took the plunge one day and did it. Stupid me I didn't even test them first, but I tried each color in the box, and they ALL washed out just fine. They are so much cheaper. They don't rinse out like the Mark-B-Gone pens, mind you, the quilt has to be washed with some kind of soap or detergent to get the marks out. And I would still probably use a fine-line blue washout pen if I had a really detailed fine design to draw.

Do you mean quilting lines? I use my chalk pump pencil on dark fabrics and a variety of things on light fabrics. If it is straight lines, I use painter's tape. I have pinned simple paper shapes to quilt around. I have cut out designs from Contact paper and used those to quilt around. Sometimes I just quilt 1/4 inch in on the pieced fabric shapes.
