Go to the dollar store and buy a toilet brush. It will pick up those threads wonderfully. I can sit in my chair and use it around my sewing area and cutting table, without having to get out the vacuum cleaner.

I use the crevis tool that came with my upright firt to get all the threads, then vac. ;-)

Maia B 03-21-2011 05:15 PM

Despise carpet! Like socks one only washes twice per year, a jungle of filth, IMO. I use a separate hand held vac for my sewing room, dust and vacuum whole floor less often. It gets less traffic and no food, so it stays cleaner :)

I am so glad someone ake this question. I like the shop vac need a small one. Thanks for the idea

LadyCougar 03-21-2011 05:37 PM

I use a shop vac all the time, not only in my sewing room, but when I do heavy cleaning around the house. The suction is great.

Grandma Jane 03-21-2011 05:37 PM

I have hardwood so a dust mop works great. My issue is that the thread builds up on the wheels of my chair - what do you do about that?

roseOfsharon 03-21-2011 05:39 PM

I use my vacuum on the carpet and tile areas.

Nettie Phillips 03-21-2011 05:39 PM

I use my regular vacuum but when I am sewing I try to keep
on my threads in one place until I get done or sit the waste
basket beside me.

Renee110 03-21-2011 06:06 PM

I use a shop vac. It picks up everything.

nett2 03-21-2011 06:09 PM

I use a lint roller for the threads then vacuum.

cmagee84 03-21-2011 06:11 PM

A vacuum cleaner run by my son! We divide chores in my house! :)

BarbZ 03-21-2011 06:15 PM

i have a little battery powered vac by Shark. Its like a motorized carpet sweeper. I just clean out the little drawer every now and then. Works slick. It was only 35.00 at Walmart.

Annz 03-21-2011 06:17 PM

I have central vac.

I have this problem too. I turn the chair upside down and use a utility knife to cut through the threads, then use a tweezers to pull it out. Went to a flea market this weekend and got a nice office chair with four adjustment leavers ($5.00) and one for $8.00 with arms. The wheels were packed with rug fuzz, dog/cat hair. I spent a couple of hours getting all that mess off the wheels, squirted with WD-40, and they work like new ones. Hope this works for you too. Mary

I use a Shark light weight vacuum. It had a removable retention cup that holds a whole days cleaning.

My DH does mine! he also takes the threads off the beater bar. I have had him for 39 years and I am not trading him. He is a keeper!!!!!

patdesign 03-21-2011 08:01 PM

I have the 8 lb orek and a hoky for getting loose threads. Light weight and quick.

glenda5253 03-21-2011 08:19 PM

I have tile in the sewing room so I usually use the swiffer but right now our furbaby is blowing his coat so the last time I used the vacuum to chase blonde hair dust bunnies down.

grammysharon 03-21-2011 09:23 PM

We have an old Sears Canister that I use to pick up big stuff and my regular vac for everything else.

Gerbie 03-21-2011 09:38 PM

I try notice I said try to keep threads up as I go. A friend gave me several empty folgers plastic coffee containers (I don't drink coffee) and I have one sitting on the floor next to my chair. I try to drop threads and scraps into that. If I have a lot of threads loose on the floor, or when I move my project, I use a wad of blue painters tape and a little exercise of bending over or squatting and picking up the threads with that, really works good for me, then I vacumn. I have a small magnetic wand I use sometimes for the pins.

Hosta 03-21-2011 10:13 PM

my son bought me a Dyson to use because it is lightweight and I could no longer use a heavier machine to to physical problems that thing works great I love it and it maneuvers anywhere I need it to

Scakes 03-22-2011 04:18 AM

I use an old canister vacuum. Like the idea of the shop vac though and being able to open it up and get things out easliy if they get sucked up by mistake.

DirtyPaw 03-22-2011 04:49 AM

I use the hose attachment from my vacuum so that it is not using the beater.

mrsddh97 03-22-2011 05:18 AM

I use both shop vac and regular household vacuum depending on the depth of cleaning being done

pheasantduster 03-22-2011 05:28 AM

I just realized that threads in the sewing room are like weeds in a garden - the more you pull them up - the more come back! Happy quilting/gardening

wolph33 03-22-2011 05:47 AM

wow never thought of that-I have 2 shop vacs-a big one for woodworking in garage and a small one in the house for the dog room.now I have another use for it.thread does cause havoc on the beater bar.

selm 03-22-2011 01:41 PM

First I use an extendable magnet to pick up stray pins, then I use a canister vacuum. There's not beater bar or roller to get threads wrapped up around it. Many times I use the vacuum wand alone to pick things in small places.

neeng 03-22-2011 04:35 PM

I have no carpets in my house, so just a ShopVac.

This is what I do as well.

sewingsuz 03-22-2011 05:38 PM

I have laminate floors and use a dust mop. This is after I was not carefull and my rollers on my office chair were full of thread and my DH and I had to cut and dig to free the wheels up.

kitsykeel 03-22-2011 08:07 PM

Oh, how I envy you guys without carpet in your sewing area. My sewing room is in the basement level of our home with one small window and french doors at the end of the room. I love it when I can sew upstairs in my dining room because I have hardwood floors there and so much more light from the windows. Am always checking prices on alternative floors for the sewing area, like laminate, cork or even taking up the carpet and staining and sealing the concrete under the carpet. Me thinks me hubby won't go for that though.

sewtruterry 03-23-2011 05:49 AM

What is a vacuum and how do you use it? Just call me mother nature as just like mother nature I abhore a vacuum. ROFLOL

Debra Mc 03-23-2011 10:08 AM

Good ole Shop Vac.

atvrider 03-24-2011 04:54 AM

I think hubby uses something called a Kirby. Never have seen it.

maggierubymollyclancy 03-26-2011 08:06 AM

first..a lint roller...second a little hand held vacuum...I have hard wood floors. we have to do this job gently so as not to eat things precious! I can't imagine using a machine as powerhungry as a shopvac in my sewing room!! lol I do use the regular vacuum lastly.

Debra Mc 03-28-2011 05:52 AM

Guess I'm messy. I usually sweep up most of the stuff, then pick thru to get pins out, really big stuff I pick up by hand then suck it all up in the Shop Vac. Really works for me as I miss the trash can when I'm picking out stablizer when I finish a machine embroidery.
