What is Facing?

I've seen a couple of posts referring to facing and asked about if but didn't get a response. Also saw a quilting article about it. Sounds like they are using facing instead of binding, but not sure. Can someone please explain facing to me and when to use it? Googled it but no explaination. TIA

Facing is a method for finishing the edges of a quilt. It's usually used for quilts that have lots of angles on the edges, or when you want a very flat edge. This video by Marci Baker demonstrates. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwPe_84GBfY

Google "what is facing in sewing" and a number of sites will come up. I checked out two at random (since I used to sew clothing I know what facing is) and each had an easy-to-understand explanation.

There are several YouTube videos on facing a quilt. Basically you are using 4 strips of fabric on top of your quilted piece like a frame. The outline you want is sewn through the strips and the quilt front. The outline is then trimmed with pinking shears or with small snips along the edge to ease the turning and so you can manipulate the edge until it lays nice. The straight edge of the facing strips are then hand stitched to the back of the quilted piece.
You could do the same thing by laying a solid piece over the front, do your fancy edge, cut a chunk out of the center and turn it right side out. The problem with that is, it uses more fabric and you have the hole in the back to either cover with a label of turn the edges under by applique method.

"Facing" - in clothing construction -

See attached - it's a way to finish a neckline or an armhole.
A hem is actually sort of a facing.

Although why it's called "facing" puzzles me - it's usually on the back/inside of a garment and on the back of an item.

After the facing is sewn to whatever (right sides together) - then the curves are clipped and the facing is turned to the back.

I searched for how to do this on curved edges on quilts and can find nothing but flat edge facing. I saw Tartans mini quilt with a curved edge and I can't figure it out. I want to try this but so far no luck.

That would be great, Tartan.

I will just stick with a binding to finish off my quilts.

I know it as a "knife edge finish." It's where you turn the raw edges of the quilt to the inside (abt. 1/4") and close the edge with a blind stitch or ladder stitch.

Knife edge is not the same as facing, but both are finishes that don't require binding.

That was amazing....I wish I had known how to do that when I had similar points.....I did regular binding and it was a pain.....

The tutorial is up in QB Tutorial section.

Tartan, That will be great! Thanks so much

I learned how to do different facings, plain and simple from this book: Just Around the Corner by Kari M Carr

For a no show edge for the front, I turn the border to the back.

Facing are used on art quilts as the finishing edge rather than a binding. This gives the art quilt a more "finished" look than a binding does.

This is a really good tutorial, I have never seen this way before. Thank you very much Dunster for finding this. As it happens I have a grandmothers quilt nearly finished so I will try this method. Once again, tthank you. Anne
