What Have I Created?

So Friday night my Grandbabies came over to trick or treat. Their favorite room to hang out in over here is Mamaw's room. Lily (age 7) immediately spotted my Featherweight and commented on how cool it is. Of course, she doesn't know about the little antique Singer I've got for her for Christmas! I told her the Featherweight would be hers when she grows up, and showed her a book I have of quilting projects for kids. She was already picking out her fabric out of my stash! Max (age 4) was enthralled with my treadle machine. I may have a couple of future quilters to teach! :D

Encourage and keep them interested....love to see the young ones learning o quilt!!!!

My youngest granddaughter made her first quilt when she was 4 and has always been a fabric collector. She has a file box she calls her treasure box which she keeps her fabric in and any store they happen to go to that sells fabric she has to have at least a fat quarter. I make quilts every year with a local preschool, the boys all love the sewing part, they love using machines. We use a brother (from Walmart, $89) that has speed control. I just turn the speed down and let them sew. Its been 10 years now that the preschool has been making quilts, one of their favorite activities of the year

What a great way to link education with hobbies - will bring maths into play as well as art and design!

What a great gift that you are teaching them how to quilt!

I think that is wonderful. I love hearing about grandkids or children who become quilters. That way the craft will live on.

I think it is great that the younger kids are being drawn to quilting, thanks to all the kind people who show them. I taught high school students to make a quilt in the 70's and 80's and am so happy to see how many are in the quilting world today. Such a nice connection for me all these years later. I also had a community service class at the middle school where I taught. They worked in groups to make lap quilts for the children's hospital. The last year I taught there were more than 50 lap quilts to take to Riley's Childrens Hospital in Indianapolis.

It is wonderful that some children want to learn something besides stare at a phone or computer. My own grand-children learned to quilt on my featherweight, including my grandson.
