What Height is Your Quilting Table
 

Hi, I am interested to know what is the usual height for a quilting table. I have had surgery on my right shoulder and finding it hard to quilt at a my normal table so have lowered my ironing board to suit me which is about 26 ins high. I know this is probably very low but was wondering what is the recognised height. Thank you in anticipation.

Since you said you had shoulder surgery, chances are the doctors will have you do physical therapy. Your best bet would be to ask your therapist because he/she can tell you what is best for you and your height. I am almost 6' tall and what my table is at would be too high for you based on what you said. I hope this helps.

my table is 34" high.

I've been trying to find this out too. I suppose the ergonomically correct height for your table is going to depend on YOUR height. I'm using a dining table at the moment and my feeling is that it's too high - but I'm only 5ft 1in: if I were taller it might be OK. I've been wondering about measures such as gap between knees and the underside of the table, or position of table in relation to my torso or elbows. Using your ironing board to find out what works is a brilliant idea, and I must try it!

Don't you mean your sewing machine table?

I agree that you go to PT and talk with them. You may be able to manipulate things by changing the height of your chair and not just the table surface. That is what I did and it worked really well. You can also try having something under your feet if that is a problem - like a large phone book and keep trying to you get something that feels right for you.

My quilting machine is on it's own table and isnt' height adjustable as it was made for me.

I'm 5'3". My machine is recessed into the surface of my sewing table which is 28.5".
This height is a bit low for my neck, but works well for my limited-motion shoulder on the right. I can sit to cut at it fairly easily, too.

I haven't measured mine, I'm 5'-7" and sit on a stool to be able to look down on the sewing surface. I have a sewing cabinet and my dining tabl. I bought a sewing table for my machine to sit in and I can use a dining chair. I can't remember the heigth of that either.

I never thought to say my height which is 5ft 3". I have been looking at a tut on here where the lady gave directions how to cut and sink her sewing machine into a table. I let my hubby have a look and he thinks perhaps he could modify a spare office desk which is not in use to make me a suitable table. I find using the machine a bit lower really eases my shoulder and arms and at the moment that is priority until everythings heals up.

I was taught that when you sit on your sewing chair and bend your elbow 90 degrees toward the table that is the height that your sewing surface should be. I have an adjustable desk chair so that my daughter and I can share the table equally. Hope all goes well!!!
