What is homespun fabric?

I saw this free pattern today that looks pretty simple and fun to make. It uses homespun fabric. I'm guessing because it frays easily. What is it?

It looks kind of like dishtowels.

It's loosely woven fabric and it does make wonderful rag quilts.

Bernie, can I find it at Joann's? Is it labeled "homespun". Is it cotton or what?

It's a woven fabric, and each 'thread' is color - so the color is on the front and back of the fabric (as opposed to a "printed" fabric). Most homespuns are plaids. The weave is typically much looser.

Yes, JoAnn's has it and it's 100% cotton but it's called "homespun".

Ok, thanks Bernie and DoghouseMom. Have you ever made a quilt like this? I've seen something similar where they use chenille or flannel or something and do all the steps at once. I don't think they even put batting in it.

You make them exactly the same except I used batting. Homespun is thin because of the loose weave (not too thin). I think that homespun fluffs better than flannel or chenille.

I have also never heard of homesun fabric and am wondering if I could use table clothes from a thrift store. How would I know the difference?
