What was I thinking?

Last Friday committed to do a benefit quilt for a relative of my husbands. I knew what I wanted to do, even had it started. I didn't realize how many more blocks it would take. Eighteen more to be exact, anyway got those done yesterday (Monday). DH had to go out of town on business this morning leaving at 4:40 am. I never wake up when he leaves that early. I practically bolted out of bed when I figured out that by doing a string quilt on phone book foundation meant that all that paper would have to be removed yuck. Well that took most of the morning and yes I started at around 5:00 am. Many breaks but got that done, on to putting the blocks together. The only thing left now is the border and the quilting. The benefit is this coming Saturday. I will get it done, I will get it done, I will.......

I really don't enjoy removing the paper. It takes so long and leaves such a mess!. Please post a picture of your finished quilt. I would love to see it :)

Definitely rooting for you! I've always done my strip quilts on muslin squares and having done just a small amount of paper piecing I can't imagine how much work it would be to remove all that phone book paper!

We had a speaker at our guild last month who makes nothing but string quilts, and this is what she does. When she sews the strings onto the paper, she always runs the fabric an inch or so past the paper. She doesn't square up the blocks. When she's ready to remove the paper, she gives the blocks a quick tug in each direction. Since she has shortened her stitch length, the stitching does not pull out, but the paper tears. Once the paper is removed, she presses and squares up the blocks.

She even passed blocks out at the meeting so that we could tug and remove paper so we could see how easy it was. Of course, she got the paper removed from 30+ blocks. Also, she has a daughter who loves to remove the paper from the strings.
