I was thinking of joining a block swap. Having never done one before I thought I'd ask your opinions.

What is the most important thing to consider in the blocks I create? Is it perfect piecing? Lining up everything? Perfect size?

If you are to swap say 12 finished blocks, would you plan on making say 15 so you can pick the 3 best? Or maybe even 24 and pick the best? (Yes I can be a bit obsessive).

When you "send in/present" your blocks, do you starch them first?

I think it is important that they be the exact size required and that you do the best you can on piecing, use best quality fabric u can afford, i starch mine. Most importantly is to enjoy the process tho.

The factors you mention are important. However, IMHO, the most important is getting them done and sending them.

Usually it is prewashed fabric the best piecing you can do and the correct size. I press well and do starch.

Follow the rules of that particular swap. If they tell you to prewash, please do. Follow the sizes particularly, don't want them sent back to you. Send them in on time. But to have fun is the most important.

Most important for the swap? Know the Rules-and follow them. Know for sure the date you must mail them; and make sure you mail them correctly--with enough return postage.
When you pick a block, be sure you like it and can commit to making the amount required--or be quick to write to the Swap Coordinator and change your committment (different block? or smaller number of blocks to send, etc.)

Size is very important, from there, just do your best. If you are proud of the work you did, the other swappers will be as well. It's about being fun and sharing, not being perfect.

I would go easy on the starch because many people really don't like working with starched blocks. Also it's best not to send your block wrapped up with a scented dryer sheet, covered with cat hair, or smelling like stale cigarettes.

Stop worrying! Do the best you can without worrying about being perfect. Have fun or why do it.

Thank you! Actually, Clsurz's post caused me to think about participating. I read and read and read - I read about what people liked and didn't like. I read about complaints and comments and woes. I failed to focus on what people DID like.
I have printed out the responses and I think I'll jump in with the new year - thank you all!
