What size of strip do you use when making binding? What allowance do you use when machine sewing? GAHHHHHHH!!!! I feel like Charlie Brown when he lands on his back from missing the football kick! :-/[/quote]

It's probably out of print, but "The Complete Book of Machine Quilting", Robbie and Tony Fanning, (second edition, 1994) became my bible when I started quilting. Charts, pictures, etc. on binding. It really helped me.

Well, I do double binding, cut strip 2 1/2", fold in half, stitch to back with 1/4"seam and then machine stitch to front. Watch the video every time from this board about how to end the binding. Since I learned all this here, I'm in heaven.

Landers 07-15-2011 08:00 AM

I used 2 1/4 strips and 1/4 seam allowance.

IdahoSandy 07-15-2011 08:09 AM

I do not like those really wide bindings, so use 1 1/2 inch with a 1/4 seam allowance. Start a few inches down from one corner applying the binding facing the quilt(be sure to turn under the raw edge on the starting end about 1/2-1 inch), so when you get done attaching it, turn the binding over, then turn the edge under, pin and I then hand sew it. If you are using a higher loft you will probably have to increase the width of binding. I use low loft on all my quilts.

I love that!!! "Sometimes finished is way better than perfect." As a sometimes very frustrated perfectionist, if you don't mind, I'm going to adopt that as my new slogan. Maybe then I can FINALLY finish something!!!

Bluequilter 07-15-2011 08:37 AM

I do the same.

Oh, my dear - the responses to your post will be very helpful to you - it took me FOREVER to figure it out, but with LOTS of practice and spending many "special hours" with Jack (the ripper), the light bulb FINALLY went on! Personally, I'm thinking of trying glue for the next one...

I don't miter corners either. Bind the sides, then the top and bottom. Done.

You mentioned that your 1/4" seam wasn't that great to start so my reccomendation is to get a 1/4"foot for your machine that will automatically give you the right size. It takes away so much stress and gives you the accuracy you need.
As far as binding, you have had several great rccomendations so all I can say there is practice. Try just making something small to practice on, even just a sandwich of scrap material and batting and practice, practice, practice.

Joselake 07-15-2011 09:24 AM

I ditto this same technique

Aminnie 07-15-2011 09:32 AM

I was frustrated with videos too and finally asked LQS. They made it so do-able. Now I enjoy doing it. If you near my middle of nowhere, come on over :)

I do not mind doing the binding at all. To me it is a sign - ahh almost finished. I cut my strips 2 1/2" or sometimes 3" wide. Sew all my strips together - iron seams open and fold edges-wrong sides together and iron. I then roll it up and it is ready to sew onto quilt.

tlstick 07-15-2011 11:28 AM

Oh how I feel your pain...never happy with my corners...I would pay extra for my long arm quilter to put it on.. I watched this video and tackled a small sampler and I DID IT!!!!! Watch is site http://contented.typepad.co.uk/conte...o-binding.html I think you will like it.

I do the exact same thing!

quiltin fool 07-15-2011 11:30 AM

I agree that going to your LQS is a good idea. Sometimes it works best to learn "hands on" with an "expert" to guide you.

Ripped on Scotch 07-15-2011 11:39 AM

I serge my edges first.. and then I use a 2 1/4" double binding. and i attach it with a 1/4 seam or just a hair larger to hide the serged edge on the front, then hand stich it to the back. I find that serging it helps make them easier for me to handle and they always lay better so I'm not as frusterated with it.

** added**
I also have this thing it's called a "little foot" it's a 1/4 foot that has 1/4 marked before and after the needle position so i stop and start at the correct points for a mitered corner.

Or I hand it to my mom and ask her to finish it! but thats a last resort.

topstitch 07-15-2011 11:50 AM

Hi, Just Lee, Go the BH&G.com --crafts--quilting-- binding

This is a wonderful video that will surely help you with your binding problems. to connect the beginning edge of binding to the ending edge cut the starting piece in a straight line (along the short edge)sew all the way around the quilt and then cut the ending edge on a 45 degree angle along the short edge with 4 or so inches of extra fabric for play, Turn the angled edge under 1/2 inch or so for the hem, press, and slip this end over top of the beginning straight edge. Hard to explain. When you become sure of yourself you can move on the the real mitered joining of the binding edges. Width of the binding piece is not so important. Just fiddle with it to get the proper stitch placement.

G'ma Kay 07-15-2011 11:51 AM

practice on potholders until you are confident to do a quilt.

I felt exactly the same way, until I learned how to make and use bias binding. I cut it 2 and 1/2 inches wide, then press (not iron) the piece carefully in half lengthwise. I then apply it from the front (1/4 inch seam), trim batting and backing, and roll it over to the back and hand stitch it to the back. Lots of people tell me I don't need to do bias binding, and that I can machine sew it down, but I can't get it flat and smooth if I don't. Just like the rest of us, you will find what works best for you. Make a few potholders to practice on, and you will find your method.

When you flip it over, press it well from both the front and back. After you fold it press a sharp crease in the binding. You probably will not even have to pin or clip the binding down to hand sew it.

Never say can't! Of course you can. froggyintexas

damaquilts 07-15-2011 12:03 PM

Keep trying what ever method you use. I use to use the 2.5 binding and .25 seam but I was always left with empty binding. I cut my binding size to 2.25 with .25 seam and stitch on the front, hand sew to back and make mitered corners. I always have to use the sheet I saved for mitered corners cause I forget. I still have not gotten the sewing the ends of the binding together with a bias seam right. I have been doing bindings for about 20 years now. Ok so I am a slow learner lol . Give yourself time and practice.

This is what I do too, if you have a walking foot it makes applying the folded 2 1/2" strip a breeze.

DiannaLynn 07-15-2011 12:26 PM

that's how I do it

I had just that question today. How to you bind a baby quilt as babies are apt to chew on the edges. A double binding is the answer. Thanks!

Sanpot 07-15-2011 01:17 PM

Ditto

Donna in Mo 07-15-2011 01:24 PM

I don't trim the backing and batting until after I have attached the binding. Then I cut it even with the binding seam or larger if I am using blanket binding. I always want it to fill up the binding. I use 2 1/2" binding doubled over
. I think most of us use the same size for all quilts. If you watch Missouri Star Quilt you tube video, you will understand it better.

My time 07-15-2011 01:29 PM

21/2 inch strips folded in half, sewed on with a 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch seam.I like Kay Woods way for mitered corners as well. Try a practice piece Charlie Brown. (sorry I couldn't resist).

janny40 07-15-2011 01:50 PM

I start out with 4 1/2 inches, I fold mine in half which makes it 2 1/4 inches, I sew that on the quilt with a 1/4 inch seam on my sewing machine, then turn it to the back and sew it on by hand sewing. It turns out to be 1 inch when I get done. I always leave enough batting to puff it up, like one inch.

Same for me. Works the best and fills the binding completely

As for hand stitching, it is hard to describe. The link that Chele posted for Dreamweavers tutorial is a good one. It has really clear pictures. It's the site I found when I was trying to figure out how to hand stitch binding.

I wish I was closer because I would gladly help you with both binding and FMQ. I'm not perfect at either but I've come a long ways with both since I first started quilting. But alas, KY is quite a ways from MS. :)

Aww, thanks for your kind offer! I wish I was closer too, just because you are so nice to offer help to a dummy like me! lol

Ugh! I am so sorry for you and dread the rest even more! I have never made a regular size anything that was a "real pieced, basted, and quilted", So I am sure I will be screaming about that too when the time comes!! I bite my fingernails somewhat and those little safety pins kill my fingers too! I will probably spray baste, whenever I can find 505 spray in my area!

Wow! You must be wickedly good at binding for her to bring them to you!! What a confidence builder that would be :) Go You!!

I cut my binding 2.25 inches and use a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Then when I trim the quilt, I trim 1/2-inch from the seam line. This allows enough batting to fill the binding. Then I flip it to the back, mitre the corners, and hand stitch it down. The edge of my binding usually just covers the stitching line.

Annz 07-15-2011 03:12 PM

I use 2 1/2 inch strips.

I cut 2 1/2 inch strips, fold wrong sides together, press well, sew 1/4 inch on the back and turn to the front, press well and stitch by machine. By all means use a walking foot, it is invaluable. I find if I go slow and be careful it turns out good.

If you get the Binding Gizmo you won't go wrong and every binding will come out perfect. You can google "Binding Gizmo" to find it or if you like Nancy's site here is her web site.
