what kind/design of quilt to make out of these blocks

I got a garbage bag full of quilting squares at a yard sale. There are probably 20 different kinds of colored squares/blocks with the same design. I have taken a picture of six of the different colors. They are have 6-12 each of the same color. What kind of quilt would you make with this block design?

TexasSunshine 04-08-2015 02:54 AM

I would sew sashing in between each block, sew them together so many across and down, depending on how big you want it, add a thin border, then a wide border about 5 inches. That would be simple and go pretty fast.

If they are all the same size, you could cut them in 4 and use them as 4 patches. Lots of patterns use 4 patches.

This might work.

I would also probably cut them.

PenniF 04-08-2015 05:17 AM

The fact that one has dark corners and the other 4 light, i think i'd put that one in the center on point - the others at top, bottom and sides on point and fill in with squares & triangles in another color. I had to smile...i have 3 of those fabrics in my "scraps" ....they have been in my stash for quite a while as i bought a bunch way back when.

donnajean 04-08-2015 05:23 AM

I recognize the fabrics from the late 1990's.

ManiacQuilter2 04-08-2015 05:46 AM

Very pretty quilt luana. Sometimes you need to make a few more block to fill in any color gaps.

This was what I was thinking too--cut them in quarters and you have 4 patches. Also alternating some cut in half, and all together you would have a cute scrappy quilt.

I like both suggestions above. Just do whatever appeals to you.

I agree with Texas Sunshine. They look as though the corners match as they are and if you cut them into four patches, you will (1) weaken the seams as they are now and (2) risk never being able to put them back together so that the corners meet. Why make things harder than they have to be? froggyintexas

What a nice find. I like what TexasSunshine suggested.

Why cut them? these make this top...alternating with a solid square.

Obviously this one uses the light/white in the middle

I made the one above using 8.5" blocks.

I made the one below for my neighbor using 6.5" (before sewing into quilt) blocks

justflyingin thanks for pointing that out. I have some fabric that I have been trying to figure out what quilt it would work best in and this is perfect.

Geri B 04-09-2015 04:20 AM

Luana.......your solution is perfect....a simple block looking lovely....and not a brain-teaser.......

isewman 04-09-2015 05:13 AM

I agree with luana

justflyingin 04-09-2015 07:27 AM

If I were you, I'd do what Luana said with all the ones with dark centers and make one like mine with the light centers.

tessagin 04-09-2015 07:35 AM

Neat haul!!!

solstice3 04-10-2015 04:25 AM

Some great ideas and great score!

bneuen 04-10-2015 04:44 AM

Eye catching. Nice.

Yooper32 04-10-2015 06:10 AM

I think that you really "lucked-out" with this purchase and have gotten some really good ideas here.

piepatch 04-10-2015 06:17 AM

I recognized a couple of the fabrics too, but I can't remember from when, only that it has been a while!

WMUTeach 04-10-2015 06:52 AM

I would suggest putting them on point and make a beautiful scrappy! (But then... I seem to be a scrap-a-holic.)

I know I have seen pictures of quilts on point however I have never done it. Can you explain it to me. Attached is picture with all the quilt blocks.

your idea is great

QuiltQtrs 05-08-2015 03:15 PM

This is beautiful .... using simple block design, setting on point, with sashings ... now a masterpiece.

lfty298 05-08-2015 03:40 PM

hi mary - for other ideas use google images with the search term 'puss in the corner quilts'
i have often used that block with an alternating block - such as churn dash for some nice (but simple) results.
if you have a quilt design program - such as eq - try using yr blocks and aternating them with other 9 patch type blocks.

lynnie 05-08-2015 07:49 PM

love this setting, Luana

Yes, this is what I would do. This is a gorgeous quilt.

Just lay them out on the floor. You will also need to cut triangles to put along the edge. How long are the sides on the blocks? For example if the blocks are 12 1/2 inches along the side you will need to cut 12 7/8 in. squares to make the triangles out of for the sides. If that seems overwhelming 13 in. might work too and cut those in half diagonally.

Here you go! A tute on how to do it.

osewme 05-09-2015 04:24 AM

Have you every seen/made any disappearing blocks? I know these aren't 4 patches but maybe you could experiment & come up with a nice disappearing block from these. Just cut them up & rearrange the cut pieces to something unusual & pleasing to you.

quilterpurpledog 05-09-2015 05:16 AM

I also recognize several of those fabrics. I think Luana's quilt is beautiful and the easiest answer for using these blocks. I think the on-point setting is very striking. Or, cutting the squares would make modern looking designs. Remember you look at the squares with 'different eyes' than the original maker. Fun opportunity for a small amount of cost. We will be anxious to see what you do.

sewbizgirl 05-09-2015 05:28 AM

If there are the same number of squares with dark corners as light, I'd just sew the blocks directly to each other (no sashing) with the dark corners and light corners alternated.

I also like the idea of cutting into 4-patches...
