I only use the foot that came with my machine. I have an old 1950's Singer that is a reproduction of an 1850's machine. I do not have any fancy stitches and don't want any.
But if I need to do other things or replace my foot or machine I need to get more informed.

So what kind of foot do you use? I am not real sure when I see a foot refered to just what they are talking about.

I collect old sewing machine related things and i have several plastic cases of parts including feet but I still do not have a clear picture of what they are all for.

I use only my 1/4 foot when quilting. It does help enormously keeping your seams spot on.

So what is a walking foot?

Nancy Zieman (Sewing With Nancy) has a book out that shows how to use all of the different feet. I seen this on her show and then checked it out from my library. Different feet can make sewing sooo much easier and more professional looking too!

A walking foot helps keep the many layers of fabric and batting together as you sew, less/no slippage. :D
Many many types of 1/4 Inch feet are available. Piping foot, open toed foot, satin stitch, edge joining foot, cording foot, sequin foot, there are so many. Check out the different sewing and vacuum web sites, many have all these feet and more. You can then search for tutorials on how to use them :D

I have several vintage Singers and they all have low shank feet. I can use about any foot that fits a low shank machine. My Singers only do straight stitch so I don't need but the regular foot and the 1/4 foot. I like the 1/4 inch foot with the guide. They are for sale on most vintage Singer sites. I have a Featherweight and a 15-91 in cabinet.

I use lots of different feet for my Singer. Depends on what I'm working on but for piecing I use my "little foot" which is a plastic 1/4 inch foot. Makes life way much easier. I still have to measure every time to make sure, just my nature to 'make sure' lol lol

If you have Singer parts...........I have a hand crank singer that I need a bobbin case and bobbin for. My sister bought it 'as is' at an auction when she was living in Scotland with her military husband. It's in the original wooden case and all. I love it and keep looking everywhere for parts to it.

Many of those old Singer machines use standard bobbin cases and bobbins. Try to identify the "class" of Singer machine you have. Does it have a model number on it? From that you can determine class. Otherwise you can usually figure it out just by comparing it to pictures on the web. Class 15 Singers are very common, and there are vintage stores online that sell the parts. Sometimes you can find the specific owner's manual, parts list, and repair manuals for free online.

Thanks so much. I would love to replace the bobbin winder if I ever could. It won't work right. I tried to replace the rubber on the wheel but it didn't work.

All I have is a number on a plate # L23683

I did trace it back to being a 50's repro of an 1850's model but no more than that.

Appreciate any help I can get. My concern is that if I ever have to give it up I will have a real problem because the foot on mine is a 1/8" on the right side facing me. I use that to sew close to the edge of my stuff for the finish edge and I am concerned I will have to go to a modern foot which will be too big and make it diffucult to do what I do.

I have wondered if I could use this foot on a modern Singer but probably not. Just hope mine doesn't give up the ghost any time soon!!!

Taht looks just lkie mine. I love it. I use a short shank walking foot on mine. But have never gotten it to machine quilt. I skips stiches goint through the sandwich. Have thought about getting longer neddles but have not as yet. I love to hand quilt any way.
