Can someone tell me what kind of sewing machine needles I need for my 1941 Singer 15-91? I'm not sure if there are certain ones to use or not use. I don't have the manual and hope someone here can help me. I would really like to start using her...
Thanks!
Deb

Here is a manual you can download for free. Hope it helps.

I've always been confused by needles also. Why are there so many different sizes???? For my viking designer, I use Schmetz universal 130/705 for piecing (for no reason; I just guessed), found I needed a top stitch needle for thick thread and bought 130N and for some reason decided I needed quilting needles and bought 130/705 also. All this was a shot in the dark. What SHOULD I be buying? They're also so expensive!

Singer needles are a smidgen bit longer then other needles and will work best in the older Singer machines.

This is kind of an answer to the lady who was having trouble FMQ sideways. I changed machines to do the FM and took out the needle that was in there as it kept jamming up. I thind it was a quilting needle (green color on it). Looked in the box of needles and found a loose one with a longer thread hole, no color on it. Worked beautifully!!! No more jamming when I went sideways. Don't know what kind it is, haven't found another one yet in all my stash's, could be a topstitch needle.

I have a 15-91 too and I use Singer color coded needles 15X1 available just about anywhere. I have to use needle-nosed pliers to put the needle in though because it needs to go in with the flat side to the left. My fingers just don't want to put it in that way as my other machine that I've had for over 30 years uses the same needle but the flat side to the right!
