I am looking to buy a sewing machine that I can make quilt labels for my quilt customers with. Not looking for a strictly embroidery machine at this time.Just lettering and dec. stitches. Suggestions appriciated.

My Brother SE350 does great labels I just wish the lettering was just a little smaller it was about $400 dollars and is also just a sewing machine. I love it!

in MY opinion, lables done on a sewing machine with letters does not look nearly as good as from an embroidery machine and they are harder to do because you can only do one line at a time, most home embroidery machines are regular sewing machines, they just have an emb. attachment. my Singer was less than $500 and I love it, does beautiful work and sews wonderfully too

You mentioned customers, so I'm assuming that you'd want it to be a professional looking label. I agree that you probably would not be happy with a sewing machine that stitches letters as one of the decorative stitch option, I would definately go somewhere for a demo of one. There are embroidery only machines and if you are only going to do labels, you may be able to get away with the smallest size embroidery area which is 4X4 inches. Check on

they carry several brands.

You can also buy a reasonably priced Brother that will sew and embroider. I agree with Kathy, lettering isn't near as professional looking from a regular sewing machine that can letter. Embroidery machines have several fonts, many designs, you can change the font size from small to large. Embroidery machines do have an advantage. I have a Janome 350e and no two labels are alike, it really personalizes the items you make and share. I think your clients would really appreciate a unique label.
