I've recently seen fabric advertised on the QB as "Vintage". What makes fabric "vintage" - - does it have to be over a certain age and how do you determine that age unless the date is on the selvage or you actually remember when you purchased it?

20+ years old?
Many fabric prints and colors were only produced in certain years. So it is easy for some to tell just from looking. There are also books that show fabrics from different time periods :D:D:D |
vintage is an elusive word. There was a time when it meant something over 50 years old.....which means I am well into "vintage"
However, to me vintage in fabric is most likely anything printed before WWII. |
"vintage" floats around on Ebay, too. It's derived from descriptions of wine: Vintage '65, for example. Somehow the year part was dropped. It's really a questionable term. It appears to mean 'old but not antique.' Vintage 1930 has meaning. Depression era has meaning. WWII vintage is also meaningful. Vintage 2004, O.K. "Vintage whatever is indefinite.
Can you tell I don't care for the word as it is currently misused? :? |
What I have always been told, is it has to be at least 10 years old to be called vintage---and 100 to be antique.

for "vintage" to be used in an item description, it must documented to be no less than 20 years old. Generally "vintage" is between 20 & 90 years!
Anything younger than that is really just "OLD", or collectible! |

Yeah, between vintage and rare I am not sure anything is commonly available any more. Priced some cars I bought at a garage sale for DGS, one site called them rare and wanted big bucks(over $25). Another site just described them and dated them correctly -- and they were more reasonable(under $5). They all came with boxes, as did the ones I have. Since I paid fifty cents each, I figured they could be played with.
