I love to use bleached muslin for dying fabrics. IMO it is the only thing to use. It washes up great for all the pre-wash and dry required and absorbs the dyes smoothly.

I like to use Muslin but just have to watch the quality of it. I bought Premium white muslin to do an Irish Chain. Just make sure you prewash it before using and I think you will be happy with it.

I love and buy muslin for backings, my favorite is Legacy Premium Muslin from Joann’s, it’s so soft and so silky makes for wonderful backings and allows quilting designs to show. I buy it in 118 in width, 60 in and 45 in widths.

I use the very cheapest muslin I can find for string piecing. I do pre-wash to get the shrinkage out and cut into the size base square I want. I absolutely hate tearing out paper so will not do that for string piecing.
Glad to hear about the JoAnns premium muslin and will try it as a backing someday. |
I am with Tallchick. I love muslin especially for backs and also for quilts from the ‘30’s and feedbacks. It is so nice if you are hand quilting and the stitching really shows nicely.

I bought a bolt of really nice quality muslin and have used it for backgrounds and backings. I didn’t prewash and it has been very nice. I haven’t had any issues with it. It’s called “Premium Quality Muslin - 100% cotton unbleached” by Pastad Mills division of Rockland Industries, Baltimore, MD, and it says “Quality Roc-Lon fabrics”. I bought the bolt from an individual and still have half of the 100 yard bold left and don’t know where she got it

My favorite muslin is made by Moda. I bought a whole bolt of it some years ago when I went to the Paducah show. It is great quality.

Roc-Lon muslin is available by the bolt at Marshall's Dry Goods in Batesville, AR. Prices are very reasonable and they have a website.

I saw this on Marshall's Dry Goods site, and admit I didn't know what Roc-Lon was, so I Googled it. Every thing I read about it online, said it was used as drapery lining to block out fading from sun. Is this true? Glad you mentioned it 1Nanoo, as I would like to know.

Roc-Lon is a brand name.
They make several types of fabrics. Muslin(s) are one of them. https://www.roc-lon.com/home-sewing-crafts-fabrics/ |
