What is the name of the block
Maybe it's just too early in the morning but for life of me, I can't find or remember the name of the block used in this pattern. Link to the image on Pinterest is found here, I don't think we can post pictures on the board from Pinterest.
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/815292338769619116/ Or if someone can post or link to how it's made, I don't want to make as small 3" finished which I guess is the size of the one in the picture. Here it is in another configuration which is in the book "Small Treasures From Scraps", I'd like to not have to purchase another quilt book if possible. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/715931671987480833/ |
The link doesn't work for the first one, but the second link looks like the kitchen woodbox. Here are the free instructions:

The kitchen woodbox does contain the questioned block. but the questioned block name is Birds in the Air

Birds In the Air is similar but not the same. It has an additional HST in place of a square. Kitchen Woodbox is the one you're looking for.

I don't think it is either of the blocks referenced.
To me it looks like a shaded 4 patch. The first link (which did work for me) just shows numerous shaded 4p lined up. On the 2nd link each one is turned to form the octagon shape. Here is tutorial on how to make them. https://stitchingcircle.com/2012/12/...atch-tutorial/Edited to add on the link I posted she just shows the triangle unit, if you alternate it with a solid block the same size you will get the block in the 2nd picture. But there are many tutorials out there for this unit. I just like this method of construction which is the same method Sally Schneider uses and calls it Mary's Triangle units. |

http://www.quilterscache.com/B/BirdsInTheAirBlock.html Not quite ..... the pattern requested does not have the small HST that's in BITA. If it is switched to a solid square, then that is one block of the quilt in question with four of them put together. The other is a 4-Patch block. Then these two blocks are alternated across the quilt. A nice pattern ... and would be great as a scrappy project. |
I agree with QuiltE. There are two alternating blocks, one a simple 4 patch and the other four smaller shaded four patch blocks, which Sally Schneider calls Mary’s triangles. There is an online calculator to make whatever size you want.

Just an FYI in reference to the op’s comment about buying another quilt book: I’ve found my local library has been happy to buy quilt books I’ve requested. I then get to be the first person to check them out!
