While at a retreat, I was working with a box of scraps. I made HSTs an only came up with 20 blocks. To make them into a more useful amount for a donation quilt, I added another triangle to each to make them look like this:

None of us could think of what this block is called. I'm sure I'll kick myself once you tell me LOL

l checked " Quilters Cache". Found it on page 2 named as " pinwheel" Note ... it is a part of 4 units rotated to form a 3 tone pinwheel block.

bearisgray 05-05-2019 04:06 AM

Rhonda - from this board - called the unit "Boston Block".

I’ve always thought I called a quarter square triangle block.

dunster 05-05-2019 06:04 AM

I agree with tallchick. It's a quarter square triangle variation. It can be used in many combinations, including the pinwheel block that stitch678 found.

joe'smom 05-05-2019 06:23 AM

I believe Deb Tucker calls it a 'combination unit.'

QuiltnNan 05-05-2019 07:07 AM

wow, lots of possibilities... thanks for all the input

A square made from one HST and two QSTs - which is a bit cumbersome to say!

1 S = 1 HST + 2 QST

Many years ago Quilter's Newsletter magazine had an article about that unit. Then they showed variations of how to use that unit. I do not remember what it was called in that article.

jclinganrey 05-05-2019 07:39 AM

I think it's called a 3/4 triangle square block.

Jingle 05-05-2019 09:17 AM

Lots of good feedback. All the names sound possible.

EasyPeezy 05-05-2019 09:42 AM

So many names to that block. Some call it Split QST.

Shepherdess55 05-05-2019 05:28 PM

I call it a "y" block because the seams form the letter "y" or the mirror of it.

maviskw 05-06-2019 04:22 AM

I've always known it as a Boston Block or a Quarter Square Triangle Block. You can do lots of things with that block. Put them together one way to make twisted ribbons or another way to make pyramids.

I have learned to call it a Boston Block, probably from this board. lol
