What is this needle used for?

I found this needle when organizing my needle box. I remember buying it but I have no idea what for, it was years ago.

I have seen upholstery needles that are angled but without the little jog at the tip that yours has. I have seen tapestry needles that just have the little jog at the tip but not angled like yours.

It is going to be so much fun when someone supplies the answer. I have no idea but I would probably try to repair a shoe or do some leather craft with it. I know we have some leather workers here.

Onebyone 01-30-2020 11:30 AM

I've never been interested in working with leather but I do know I bought this needle. Just cannot remember why or where. It is not hefty, more like regular needle, sharp too.

Peckish 01-30-2020 12:10 PM

A tapestry needle, perhaps?

There are also some posted on Amazon for "seaming and darning craft projects". So maybe you planned on making stuffed animals or something similar?

Macybaby 01-30-2020 12:57 PM

I've seen some suture needles with odd shapes, and they are very sharp. Maybe for large animal, it's too big for use on people.

I'd be more inclined to think it's for doll/stuffed animal sewing.

Have you ever been interested in making stuffed dolls? I have a needle very similar to yours that I used to make dolls for my grandchildren.

I have seen and used many differently shaped needles but not one like this. I will be watching this thread to see what comes up on its use.

sewbizgirl 01-30-2020 04:00 PM

Could it be a snag grabber?

Tartan 01-30-2020 05:42 PM

It might be handy for thread basting a quilt. When I thread baste, I have to put one hand under the quilt to bring the needle back to the top. It looks like with the bends you could do it all from the top maybe?

Peckish 01-30-2020 11:54 PM

Oooh I can't wait to see what we win! :D

Have you thought of getting a curved upholstery needle to use for your thread basting? When I sandwich my quilt I use big binder clips all around the table edge so getting my hand under the fabric is impossible. When I baste (usually with pins but sometimes thread) there seems to be enough 'give' in the sandwich to be able to get the pin/needle up to the top again without having to put my hand under. But a curved needle might do the trick for you??

Tartan 01-31-2020 05:36 AM

I have thought of using a curved needle but the ones I’ve seen are too thick. I don’t want to chance breaking a thread in the fabric with a too thick needle.

Could be for either upholstery or sewing up bags of grain in earlier days. I notice bags are done by machine nowadays.

SusieQOH 01-31-2020 07:04 AM

To me it looks like an upholstery needle.

Cheshirepat 01-31-2020 08:12 AM

To me it looks like something Iv'e done on my machine during a Very Bad session of sewing! :D (Well, one of us had to think that, right?)

AlaskaAlice 01-31-2020 08:32 AM

I have upholstery needles..non with such a sharp bend..but some of the suggestions that are mentioned might be a good use for it.. I make dolls and it looks like it might be useful for that?

thimblebug6000 01-31-2020 08:53 AM

I'm going to guess for beading.

Here is a bent needle for Navajo weaving. https://halcyonyarn.com/multi_craft/...-style-weaving

I think it's a looper for an old overlock machine..did you ever have an old serger?

No never used a serger, had an old one but I know I wouldn't have bought a needle for it. Here is another picture with size comparison.

Well, the eye means that it is a hand sewing needle. As previously noted, curved tip needles are not uncommon. Is it possible that this needle got jammed in a drawer which caused it to bend in the middle?

Dedemac 02-04-2020 05:20 AM

Looks like it might be a leather lacing needle. Did you think about repairing a leather bag or wallet? Or putting a braided edge on heavy canvas or plastic?

After some cursory searching online, I wondered this as well.

Onebyone 02-04-2020 09:08 AM

I ordered the needle just the way it is. I do remember that. Just don't remember why. I never used it I do know that much. LOL It was still in the plastic package (no info ) I'm looking through order emails to see if I can find the info but I think it was too long ago to still have the order.

RedGarnet222 02-04-2020 11:54 AM

It certainly is an odd looking needle. I personally have racked my brain and I can not see a purpose with that acute bend to it.
